The Abingdon Old Testament Commentaries provide compact, critical commentaries on the books of the Old Testament for the use of theological students and pastors. The commentaries are also useful for upper-level college or university students and for those responsible for teaching in congregational settings. In addition to providing basic information and insights into the Old Testament writings, these commentaries exemplify the tasks and procedures of careful interpretation to assist students of the Old Testament in coming to an informed and critical engagement with the biblical texts themselves. The prophetic books gathered together in the book of the Twelve are sometimes called the "minor" prophets because of their relatively small size when compared with Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel. They are often neglected, at least partly because their words of judgment make the reader uncomfortable. Yet they have considerable theological and ethical value--for their call for social justice (especially Amos and Micah), their insights about the passionate love of God (in Hosea), God's grace and forgiveness (Jonah, Hosea, and elsewhere), and the finality of hope, even in the face of terrible catastrophes.

The Knowing the Bible series is a resource designed to help Bible readers better understand and apply God's Word. These 12-week studies lead participants through books of the Bible and are made up of four basic components: (1) reflection questions help readers engage the text at a deeper level; (2) "Gospel Glimpses" highlight the gospel of grace throughout the book; (3) "Whole-Bible Connections" show how any given passage connects to the Bible's overarching story of redemption, culminating in Christ; and (4) "Theological Soundings" identify how historic orthodox doctrines are taught or reinforced throughout Scripture. With contributions from an array of influential pastors and church leaders, these gospel-centered studies will help Christians see and cherish the message of God's grace on every page of the Bible. The books of Joel, Amos, and Obadiah are revelations from God spoken through his prophets, calling his chosen people to repent and return to him. Even though God promises judgment for their unfaithfulness, he also offers hope of restoration in the Promised Land and reconciliation to him as their Lord. This 12-week study helps readers see how the justice and mercy of God lead to the hope of glorious salvation, as we wait for the day when Jesus returns to free us from our enemies and our sin and establish his rule over all the nations. Part of the Knowing the Bible series.

God's ways with Israel of old beautifully illustrate the saving grace of God now seen in Christ's church, particularly in the individual members of His body. Nothing can be found in them as a meritorious cause of their "high calling of God in Christ Jesus" (Phil. 3:14). Like unfaithful Israel, every reason appears why they should have been cast away, as Paul recites so eloquently of himself: "Who was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: but I obtained mercy because I did it ignorantly in unbelief. And the grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus." (I Tim. 1:14,15). He then establishes the gospel of grace as that faithful saying given to include the worst of sinners who believes in Jesus Christ to the end of time: "This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief. Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting. Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen." (vs. 15-17).
