"The first Pacific Symposium on Biocomputing (PSB), will be held January 3-6, 1996 at the Ritz Carlton Hotel on the Big Island of Hawaii. PSB will bring together top researchers from North America, the Asian Pacific nations, Europe, and around the world, to exchange research results and address open issues in all aspects of computational biology. Replacing and extending the last three years of Biotechnology Computing Tracks at the Hawaiian International Conference on System Sciences, PSB will provide a forum for the presentation of work in databases, algorithms, interfaces, visualization, modelling and other computational methods, as applied to biological problems, with emphasis on applications in data-rich areas of molecular biology. The PSB is focussed into 4 tracks, 4 minitracks, 2 workshops and includes two invited keynote speakers, viz., Logical Simulation of Biomolecular Information Pathways (Minoru Kanehisa, Kyoto Univ.) and CEX and the Single Chemist (David Weimger, DAYLIGHT Chemical Info. This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 4th International Conference on Intelligent Data Analysis, IDA 2001, held in Cascais, Portugal, in September 2001.The 37 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from a total of almost 150 submissions. All current aspects of this interdisciplinary field are addressed; the areas covered include statistics, artificial intelligence, neural networks, machine learning, data mining, and interactive dynamic data visualization.

The last half century has seen the development of many biological or physical t- ories that have explicitly or implicitly involved medial descriptions of objects and other spatial entities in our world. Simultaneously mathematicians have studied the properties of these skeletal descriptions of shape, and, stimulated by the many areas where medial models are useful, computer scientists and engineers have developed numerous algorithms for computing and using these models. We bring this kno- edge and experience together into this book in order to make medial technology more widely understood and used. The book consists of an introductory chapter, two chapters on the major mat- matical results on medial representations, ?ve chapters on algorithms for extracting medial models from boundary or binary image descriptions of objects, and three chapters on applications in image analysis and other areas of study and design. We hope that this book will serve the science and engineering communities using medial models and will provide learning material for students entering this ?eld. We are fortunate to have recruited many of the world leaders in medial theory, algorithms, and applications to write chapters in this book. We thank them for their signi?cant effort in preparing their contributions. We have edited these chapters and have combined them with the ?ve chapters that we have written to produce an integrated whole.

Molecular networks provide descriptions of the organization of various biological processes, including cellular signaling, metabolism, and genetic regulation. Knowledge on molecular networks is commonly used for systems level analysis of biological function; research and method development in this area has grown tremendously in the past few years. This book will provide a detailed review of existing knowledge on the functional characterization of biological networks. In 15 chapters authored by an international group of prolific systems biology and bioinformatics researchers, it will organize, conceptualize, and summarize the existing core of research results and computational methods on understanding biological function from a network perspective.
