Excerpt from Is Mexico Worth Saving Dating from the Conquest, Mexico has been the recognized kaleidoscope among the nations. So rapidly are events habitually juggled through out her territories that no man, whether native or foreign observer, has ever prophesied with success as to the course she would take in any crisis unless he prophesied disaster on the theory that what has been, will be. Excerpt from Recollections of Mexico I Have yielded with a good deal of reluctance to the importunities of many of my friends in consenting to devote the little leisure which is left me from professional and other avocations, to writing the following pages. No thought of such a thing ever occurred to me during my residence in Mexico, or I should have supplied myself, as I had abundant means of doing, with the materials for such a work. The book, therefore, will be found to contain just what its title imports - "Recollections and Desultory Dissertations." The reader must not expect the life and freshness of a finished picture, but mere sketches and outlines - nor that minute exactness of detail on many subjects which may be desirable, although I believe that the sketches will be found to be generally accurate; I can say in the words of an affidavit to an answer in chancery, "that the facts stated as of my own knowledge are true, and those stated on the information of others I believe to be true." I am not sure, however, that a description of the customs, scenes, and peculiarities of a country is not generally the better for being written a year or two after the writer has left it. The want of exactness in minute particulars is compensated by the absence of a sometimes wearisome tediousness of detail, and often of circumstances of interest only to the writer. And it is perhaps also true that the general remembrance - a sort of skeleton map which is left on the mind of the writer will give to the reader a more accurate coup d'aeil of the country and all its peculiarities, physical and social, than a more minute description. Before I went to Mexico I sought in vain for some work which would give me some idea of the society, manners, and customs of that unique, and, in a great degree, primitive people. This want has been since supplied. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Conquest of Mexico After a Short stay in England he returned to Boston, and desired, in spite of his failing sight, to lead a life of literary occupation. It may seem strange that one, who in his college days had only the ambition of learning as much literature as a gentleman ought to know, and who had never been able to accustom himself to habits Of industry, should now consecrate his energies to literary pursuits but the last six years of his life had been years of stem discipline, and during the long days spent in the dark room, graver thoughts and a nobler ambition had filled his mind. The difficulties before him were great. His classical studies, it is true, had never been neglected, but his deficiencies in modern literature were considerable. Of English he had had as much perhaps read to him as most people Of his age had read to themselves. Of French literature he knew nothing; and of Spanish and Italian he had merely a schoolboy's knowledge. Moreover, he had constantly to fight against a tendency to waste his time, while the necessity of forming fixed habits of work was a task of no little difficulty. He determined to begin from the very elements, and, wisely too, to begin with English. He studied as if he were a schoolboy, beginning with Lindley Murray's grammar, and Johnson's dictionary, and then reading carefully the best authors, from Ascham and Bacon to those of his own time. Thus a year passed Then, hav1ng finished this course, he turned to French literature, going, as he says, deeper and wider than he had done in English. Italian came next, and then Spanish. German, however, he was compelled, owing to his weak sight, to abandon. He now felt competent to begin the real task of writing a history, and searched for a subject. After some hesitation he decided on a history of the times of Ferdinand and Isabella. To enable him to attempt the work, a secretary, Mr. English, was engaged to read to him for five or Six hours every day. Prescott was in no hurry. For the next three and a half years he was Collecting materials, and then only commenced the actual composition so that it was not till the year 1837 (or thirteen years after the time at which he decided on his subject) that Ferdinand and Isabella was fairly delivered to the world. Excerpt from Mexico? Si, Senor To avoid disappointment, don't expect too much! This book is not intended to be a History of Mexico. It does not contain even all that the writer knows about that country; and what he does not know would fill several large volumes. Its purpose is to call attention to some of the places. and things in Mexico that are both worth seeing and worth going to see. The towns mentioned lying north of the city of Mexico are on the Mexican Central Railway, the main line of which runs through the centre of the country 1,224 miles, from Juarez, the border city on the Rio Grande, opposite El Paso, Texas, to the capital. One branch or division of the road, 415 miles in length, connects the capital with Tampico, the only good harbor on the Gulf of Mexico. Another division reaches out 161 miles westward from the main line to Guadalajara, the second largest city in the country, and will, one of these days, be extended to the Pacific. Two other branches serve the two great mining cities, Guanajuato and Pachuca. This great central thoroughfare is the principal railway of the Republic, and the only line of standard gauge connecting the city of Mexico with the United States. Excerpt from Mexico as I Saw It There, men still carried arms; no one dare do Other wise, for, although seldom necessary, the mere fact of having them commands respect. Wild journeys on horse back through the mountains, to Old Aztec ruins, more over, sounded inviting. In some respects Mexico, in this year Of grace 1901, is highly civilised, but in others it remains utterly barbaric. Truly a land of paradox. It is most interesting, always picturesque, sometimes blood-curdling, and Often sad. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Papers Relating to Mexico At present, however, we are waiting for the beginning of the evacuation. When that beginning shall have come, the government will cheerfully hear sug gestions from any quarter calculated to reassure the restoration of tranquillity, peace, and constitutional domestic government in Mexico; but until we shall be able to refer to such a beginning any proceedings towards negotiation would only tend to confound public Opinion in the United States, and to render the situation of Mexico more complicated.
