Intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) is a tomographic imaging modality performed during coronary angiography that allows the simultaneous assessment of lumen, vessel wall, and atherosclerotic plaque. IVUS has been established as the method of choice for the detection and serial observation of transplant vasculopathy, and more recently, for the serial observation of atherosclerotic plaque burden in atherosclerosis progression/regression trials. When performed by an operator familiar with interventional, percutaneous techniques, the rate of complications during IVUS imaging is exceedingly low. IVUS Made Easy provides an introduction to coronary imaging with intravascular ultrasound (IVUS). It consists of a brief, practical text and corresponding illustrated IVUS images. The format is uniform throughout, with a non-illustrated IVUS image displayed together with an illustrated copy. Based on the previously published An Atlas and Manual of Coronary Intravascular Ultrasound Imaging, this guide provides expanded descriptions of the practical aspects of IVUS and includes additional information in short case presentations. The book begins with the principle of IVUS imaging. It discusses normal arterial anatomy by IVUS, image artifacts and IVUS measurements. It then discusses plaque (atheroma) morphology and clinical applications. Case studies include: Coronary arteritis Angiographically indeterminate lesion Indeterminate lesion: plaque rupture Intedeterminate lesion after angioplasty Intracoronary thrombus (2 cases) Complications of IVUS: dissection Chronic coronary arterial wall dissection behind stent Intramural hematoma post-PCI Serial IVUS: regression

Intravascular Ultrasound: From Acquisition to Advanced Quantitative Analysis covers topics of the whole imaging pipeline, ranging from the definition of the clinical problem and image acquisition systems to image processing and analysis, including the assisted clinical-decision making procedures and treatment planning (stent deployment and follow up). Atherosclerosis, a disease of the vessel wall that produces vessel narrowing and obstruction, is the major cause of cardiovascular diseases, such as heart attack or stroke. This book covers all aspects of this imaging tool that allows for the visualization of internal vessel structures and the quantification and characterization of coronary plaque. Provides an introduction to the clinical workflow and current challenges in endovascular interventions Presents a review of the state-of-the-art methodologies in IVUS imaging and their applications Includes a rich analysis of the current and potential future connections between the academic, clinical and industrial fields

Atherosclerotic Plaque Characterization Methods Based on Coronary Imaging provides a complete review of computer methods for atherosclerotic plaque reconstruction and characterization. The authors, with their expertise from biomedical engineering, computer science, and cardiology, offer a holistic view. The focus of the book is on the presentation of major imaging techniques, including their limitations. It includes details on the mechanical characterization and properties of plaques and appropriate constitutive models to describe the mechanical behavior of plaques. The authors explore the challenges of using multiple coronary imaging technologies, and provide the pros and cons of invasive vs. non-invasive techniques. Methods for plaque characterization and 3D reconstruction of coronary arteries using IVUS, OCT, and CT images are described. This book will help readers study new trends in image processing analysis and plaque characterization, implement automated plaque characterization methodologies, understand coronary imaging drawbacks, and comprehend 3 dimensional coronary artery and plaque reconstruction methods. Describes the multimodality imaging techniques that are commonly used in the diagnosis of arterial diseases, including intravascular ultrasound, optical coherence tomography, angiography, computed tomography angiography, and magnetic resonance angiography Discusses in-depth the computational methods which can be used for the detection of different plaque types Explores plaque in 3D reconstruction methods and plaque modeling approaches

This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license. This quick-reference handbook offers a concise and practical review of key aspects of the treatment of ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) in the era of primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PPCI). In the context of STEMI, PPCI is the preferred mode of emergency revascularization. Access to PPCI is rapidly increasing and is now routinely practiced in both general and specialist hospitals and there has been a recent emphasis on developing STEMI networks to enhance and expedite the referral pathway. This coupled with concurrent developments to enhance the safety and efficacy of the PPCI procedure has heralded an era where STEMI interventions are increasingly considered an important subspecialty within interventional cardiology. Written by leading cardiologists who have been instrumental in the adoption of PPCI in their respective institutions, the book provides junior and senior cardiologists alike with insightful and thought-provoking tips and tricks to enhance the success of PPCI procedures, which may in turn translate into direct improvements in outcomes. The book is also relevant for healthcare providers and emergency department physicians.

Limitations of angiography, the traditional invasive method for assessing vascular pathology, have led to an interest in alternative invasive techniques that visualize the arterial wall and allow characterization of plaque type. These alternative techniques, which include intravascular ultrasound, angioscopy, thermography, optical coherence tomography, near infrared spectroscopy, and intravascular magnetic resonance imaging are able to provide valuable information regarding plaque vulnerability, the composition of plaque, and luminal morphology. Intravascular Imaging: Current Applications and Research Developments presents all available intravascular imaging techniques and analyzes their impact in clinical practice and research. This publication aims to inform medical specialists, biomedical engineers, bioinfomaticians, and researchers of current developments and future trends in intravascular imaging techniques, promoting continued evolution of this discipline.
