Innovations in Telecommunications, Part A contains the proceedings of the symposium on "Innovations in Telecommunications" of the International Symposium Series held in Kuwait in April 1981 and sponsored by the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Science. The symposium provided a forum for reviewing advances in research, development, demonstration, design, manufacture, field testing, and application in the field of telecommunications. This book is organized into two parts encompassing 13 chapters that focus on satellite communication and its applications. This edited book serves as a companion volume to the Seventh INFORMS Telecommunications Conference held in Boca Raton, Florida, March 7-10, 2004. The research presented within these articles focuses on the latest methodological developments in three key areas—pricing of telecommunica tions services, network design, and resource allocation—that are most relevant to current telecommunications planning. Chapters 1-5 address these topics by focusing on pricing of telecommunications services. In this context the optimal design/provisioning of telecommunication networks plays an important role. The modern telecommunications infrastructureâ€"made possible by research performed over the last several decadesâ€"is an essential element of the U.S. economy. The U.S. position as a leader in telecommunications technology, however, is at risk because of the recent decline in domestic support of long-term, fundamental telecommunications research. To help understand this challenge, the National Science Foundation asked the NRC to assess the state of telecommunications research in the United States and recommend ways to halt the research decline. This report provides an examination of telecommunications research support levels, focus, and time horizon in industry, an assessment of university telecommunications research, and the implications of these findings on the health of the sector. Finally, it presents recommendations for enhancing U.S. telecommunications' research efforts.
