Indias Investment Climate

The Indian economy has emerged as one of the world?s fastest growing economies in the past few years. Greater investment, increased productivity, and deeper integration in the world economy have been the key growth drivers. Nonetheless, three main challenges remain: insufficient job creation in the formal sector; large and growing disparities between states; and increasing, but still low, productivity. India's Investment Climate identifies what the government can do to tackle these challenges by improving the investment climate for three key sectors, manufacturing, retail and software-ITES. Th.

A strong investment climate is a platform for economic success. By creating opportunities and setting incentives for firms to invest and productively employ inputs, the investment climate is critical to economic growth and prosperity. Analyzing and comparing the investment climate of Brazil, India, and South Africa, three of today's largest emerging economies, this book presents policy makers with the scope of investment climate reforms in these countries. Inter- and intra-country benchmarking can be a starting point for dialogue between the government and private sector on reform priorities and help to encourage the sharing of best practices. Our hope is that this book will encourage and facilitate reform steps that can improve the investment climate in emerging economies.

Differences in the investment climate have recently gained centre stage in explaining variations in competitiveness, growth and prosperity across countries or regions. The investment climate comprises institutional and policy variables that have a crucial bearing on business performance, but over which firms have no control individually. Key determinants of the investment climate include the functioning of product and factor markets; sources of non-pecuniary intra- and inter-industry externalities (i.e., spillovers) the quality of public goods (such as law and order, government regulation) and their effects on the cost of borrowing, on price stability, or on exchange rates via fiscal and monetary policies; and some physical and social infrastructure. The report asseses India's investment climate from the perspective of industrial growth and focuses on investment climate variations within India, analyzing the implications these variations have on industrial performance, as well as, subnational disparities in productivity and growth.

This report provides an assessment of how governments can generate inclusive economic growth in the short term, while making progress towards climate goals to secure sustainable long-term growth. It describes the development pathways required to meet the Paris Agreement objectives.
