Excerpt from Index of Artists Represented in the Department of Prints and Drawings in the British Museum, Vol. 1: Dutch and Flemish Schools; German Schools With reference to the extensive division of workers last named, the merely reproductive engravers, - as a general rule the works of any one such engraver are not placed all together, but each is, when possible, represented under his own name by a certain number of selected examples, proof states or especially fine impressions, while the bulk of his ordinary work is distributed among prints after the various masters Whose originals be reproduced. This mixed system of arrangement, although not the most logical, is found in practice to be the most convenient, inas much as it lends itself equally well to the requirements, on the one hand, of students who wish to examine a series of prints after any given painter, and, on the other hand, of those Who desire to study the style and method of any given engraver. Whenever a student requires to have set before him the most complete possible series in either kind, the cross references in the Index enable such a wish to be readily gratified. Exceptions to the general rule above mentioned are made for some few of the most conspicuous names in the history of art. Thus, in the case of the famous painters Rubens and Turner, the rich collections of engravings after their works are as far as possible brought together under their respective names; while in the case of a few of the most distinguished engravers, like Sir Robert Strange or Raphael Morghen, the series of examples by each is kept as far as possible together and complete, instead of being distributed under the names of the painters after whom they worked. The present volume includes the Dutch and F lemish Schools (classed as one because at a certain period the arts, like the government, of the Netherlands were undivided), and the German Schools, including those of Austria, Bohemia, and N orthern Switzer land. After the name of each artist is placed a brief statement of the art or arts which he practised, the place or places where he worked, and the dates of his birth and death. Due pains have been taken to ensure the exactness of this information, in accordance with the latest results of research, so that the Index may also serve as a comprehensive Biographical Dictionary of Artists on a brief scale. In Art and Representation, John Willats presents a radically new theory of pictures. To do this, he has developed a precise vocabulary for describing the representational systems in pictures: the ways in which artists, engineers, photographers, mapmakers, and children represent objects. His approach is derived from recent research in visual perception and artificial intelligence, and Willats begins by clarifying the key distinction between the marks in a picture and the features of the scene that these marks represent. The methods he uses are thus closer to those of a modern structural linguist or psycholinguist than to those of an art historian. Using over 150 illustrations, Willats analyzes the representational systems in pictures by artists from a wide variety of periods and cultures. He then relates these systems to the mental processes of picture production, and, displaying an impressive grasp of more than one scholarly discipline, shows how the Greek vase painters, Chinese painters, Giotto, icon painters, Picasso, Paul Klee, and David Hockney have put these systems to work. But this book is not only about what systems artists use but also about why artists from different periods and cultures have used such different systems, and why drawings by young children look so different from those by adults. Willats argues that the representational systems can serve many different functions beyond that of merely providing a convincing illusion. These include the use of anomalous pictorial devices such as inverted perspective, which may be used for expressive reasons or to distance the viewer from the depicted scene by drawing attention to the picture as a painted surface. Willats concludes that art historical changes, and the developmental changes in children's drawings, are not merely arbitrary, nor are they driven by evolutionary forces. Rather, they are determined by the different functions that the representational systems in pictures can serve. Like readers of Ernst Gombrich's famous Art and Illusion (still available from Princeton University Press), on which Art and Representation makes important theoretical advances, or Rudolf Arnheim's Art and Visual Perception, Willats's readers will find that they will never again return to their old ways of looking at pictures.
