IBM Spectrum® Virtualize based storage systems are secure storage platforms that implement various security-related features, in terms of system-level access controls and data-level security features. This document outlines the available security features and options of IBM Spectrum Virtualize based storage systems. It is not intended as a "how to" or best practice document. Instead, it is a checklist of features that can be reviewed by a user security team to aid in the definition of a policy to be followed when implementing IBM FlashSystem®, IBM SAN Volume Controller, and IBM Spectrum Virtualize for Public Cloud. The topics that are discussed in this paper can be broadly split into two categories: System security This type of security encompasses the first three lines of defense that prevent unauthorized access to the system, protect the logical configuration of the storage system, and restrict what actions users can perform. It also ensures visibility and reporting of system level events that can be used by a Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) solution, such as IBM QRadar®. Data security This type of security encompasses the fourth line of defense. It protects the data that is stored on the system against theft, loss, or attack. These data security features include, but are not limited to, encryption of data at rest (EDAR) or IBM Safeguarded Copy (SGC). This document is correct as of IBM Spectrum Virtualize version 8.5.0.

In this paper, we outline some IBM® Spectrum Virtualize HyperSwap® SAN implementation and design best practices for optimum resiliency of the SAN Volume Controller cluster. It provides IBM Spectrum® Virtualize HyperSwap and Stretched Cluster configuration details. Note: In this book, for brevity, we use HyperSwap to refer to both HyperSwap and Stretched Cluster. The documentation there details the minimum requirements. However, it does not describe the design of the storage area network (SAN) in detail, nor does it describe the recommended way to implement those requirements on a SAN. In this IBM Redpaper publication, we outline some of the best practices for SAN design and implementation that leads to optimum resiliency of the SAN Volume Controller (SVC) cluster, and we explain why each recommendation is made. This paper is SAN vendor-neutral wherever possible. Any mention of a specific SAN switch vendor, or terms used by a specific switch vendor, is made only where relevant to a specific context, and does not imply an endorsement of a specific switch vendor. Note: Some of the figures in this document might not depict redundant fabrics or storage configurations. This was done for simplicity, and it should be assumed that any recommendations made for fabric design assume that there are two redundant fabrics.

The purpose of this IBM® Redpaper® document is to provide best practice guidelines to design and implement IBM FlashSystem® storage for database workloads. The recommended settings and values are based on lab testing, proof of concept (PoC) and experience drawn from customer implementations. Suggestions that are presented in this document are applicable to most production database environments to increase performance of I/O and availability. However, more considerations might be required while designing, configuring, and implementing storage for extreme transactional, analytical, and database cluster environments. Customers are migrating database storage to IBM FlashSystem largely due to low latency performance of the IBM FlashSystem family of Storage. Using IBM FlashSystem, IBM customers are able to achieve low latency for queries and transactions from milliseconds to microseconds, realize a multi-fold increase in application level transactions per second, increase CPU efficiency and reduce database licensing costs. Recent additions of data reduction technologies to IBM FlashSystem further increase overall TCO benefits. All IBM FlashSystem models now offer compression, which can reduce database storage by 40 - 80% depending on database software. In addition to best practices that are described in this document, the IBM FlashSystem Worldwide Solutions Engineering Team can further assist customers with performing analysis of current database workloads for IBM FlashSystem benefits, perform PoCs at our labs, and help with implementation.
