J. H. A. Lacher's treatise on the German element of Wisconsin, originally published by a division of the Steuben Society of America in 1925, is still the standard introduction to its subject. It has now been edited for republication by German-American authority Don Heinrich Tolzmann. The first section of the work focuses on Wisconsin's rich German religious establishment: Catholics, Lutherans, German Evangelical Synod, German Reformed, Evangelical Association, Liberals and Jews, and it gives the names and places of origin and settlement of pioneering clergymen and other immigrants in the various denominations. Section Two looks at representative German-Americans and their vocations in Wisconsin, with emphasis upon agriculture, art, education, temperance, business, music, cuisine, medicine, and the bar. One of the keys to Germans' assimilation in America was the ease with which they were able to transplant various social and cultural institutions in the building of a German-American identity in their adopted homeland. This is borne out in the third section of the book, which homes in upon Wisconsin German politics, the German press, sports, thrift, men of letters, German place names and patronymics, and the impact of World War I. Genealogists will find references to some 750 German surnames at the back of this volume, while persons seeking to do further research into Wisconsin German history or genealogy should consult the selective bibliography at the back of the book, which has been updated by the editor.

Excerpt from The Yankee and the Teuton in Wisconsin But if the Germans declined the role of foresters, by refusing to settle in a partially isolated town like Eagle, the Yankees did the same. New Yorkers and New England ers were scarcer there than Prussians or Hanoverians. The town was occupied mainly by families from Ohio, Kentucky, Missouri, Indiana - with a few from Virginia and North Carolina; in short, by men who had enjoyed or endured a recent experience as frontiersmen in heavily wooded regions. So many belonged to the class described by Eggles ton in The Circuit Rider, The Hoosier Schoolmaster, and The Graysons, that the name Hoosier Hollow, applied to one of the coulees, seems perfectly normal. To the Yankee, we may be sure, the heavy woods in the town Of Eagle were a sufficient deterrent to settlement there. The Germans shunned it either because they dis liked heavy clearing when it could be avoided and when no compensating advantages Offered, as was the case near the lake shore; or because they disliked the risk and the expense of crossing the river to market; or for both of these reasons combined. Probably either reason, singly, would have sufficed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Political Activity of Wisconsin Germans, 1854-60 The Democratic party, on the other hand, em'braced first of all those whose minds were less influenced by national peculiar ities and predilections, and more by that body of ideas concern ing liberty and equality which one may roughly call the Jetfer sonian doctrines - a set of Opinions essentially cosmopolitan rather than national. In the second place, to the Democratic standard flocked all those elements which everywhere consisted of the admirers of Jackson - the masses who conceived Democ racy to represent the common people as against the wealthy. The Jeffersonians were friendly toward the immigrants by rea son of their principles; the masses sympathized with the for eigners because the latter were, like themselves, and had the same economic interests. Under these circumstances it 'is not at all surprising that not only the Germans, but also the Irish and other foreigners al lied them-selves with the Democratic party. There they found less disposition to interfere with their customs regarding the keeping of Sunday, the use of beer and wine, and similar things which may appear of small account to the highly educated, but are of great importance to the masses who have few sources of enjoyment. Among the Democrats also they found a will ingness to allow them to participate in all the political rights and privileges of the native citizen.
