Hitch Hiking To India In 1962

In 1962, two Cambridge students hitchhike to India, before hippies hit the trail. Andrew writes a diary, the comedy. John reads the map, thumbs throughout the night and now writes about the history, which make for tragedy. They travel through Yugoslavia where Catholic Croats had massacred Orthodox Serbians and Serbs would later murder 8,000 Muslims, Greece where 1.3 million Christians had been 'exchanged' for 480,000 Muslims, and Turkey where 600,000 Christian Armenians had died when deported to the Syrian desert where ISIS is now based. In Iran John faces a life-threatening mob following the CIA coup. In India, they meet anger over the partition just 14 years before, when 12 million became refugees and well over a half a million were killed because of their religion. They learn about the Sikhs and the attack on the Golden Temple by Indira Gandhi. However, the two friends received fantastic hospitality throughout. Gyaneshwar Purgaus was becoming increasingly disillusioned with his job as a nurse when he decided to do the unthinkable: hitchhike from England to India. It took courage and determination to give up everything and venture into the unknown, but once he gave up his job, there was no turning back. He set out with his girlfriend, Alison, in 1982, and quickly discovered that hitchhiking is a great way to travel on the cheap. Some places were easy to get a ride-others were much harder. Once, he had to wait nine hours. He learned to observe comings and goings, the ways people behave, their ways of life, and much more during these waiting spells. He also learned to control his emotions. Tom was 20 years old, broke and wanted to go to India. So he packed up his clarinet, toothbrush and sleeping bag and hitchhiked there with no money at all. There has been a phenomenal growth of backpacker tourism from the overland routes to India in the 1960s, to present-day backpacker tourism across the less developed world. As a result there has been significant economic development impacts of backpacker tourism upon local communities especially in areas with the largest concentrations of backpackers (South and South-East Asia particularly Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and India), as well as increasingly in Latin America. This volume provides a focused review of the economic development impacts of backpacker tourism in developing regions furthering knowledge on how backpacker tourism can play a crucial role in development strategies in these areas. First, it reviews the origins of the backpackers with a detailed examination of their "hippy" predecessors on the overland trail, before discussing the emergence of modern backpackers including social and cultural aspects, and how new technologies are changing their experience. It then analyses the powerful economic development impacts of backpackers on local host communities in cities and rural areas with a special focus on coastal destinations. Extensive case study material is used from backpacker destinations across Asia, Latin America and Africa. In doing so the book provides original insights into how backpacker tourism is highly significant for poverty alleviation and effective local development since it has strong linkages to the local economy, and less economic leakage than conventional tourism. Written by a leading academic in this area, this volume will be of interest to students of Tourism and Development Studies.

"Akashvani" (English) is a programme journal of ALL INDIA RADIO, it was formerly known as The Indian Listener. It used to serve the listener as a bradshaw of broadcasting ,and give listener the useful information in an interesting manner about programmes, who writes them, take part in them and produce them along with photographs of performing artists.
