Hate watching has been described as fun and campy (Nussbaum, 2012); a form of self-deception in viewers who refuse to admit they like shitty things (Davies, 2013); a frustrating inability to let go of a show one no longer enjoys (Drumming, 2013); or a colossal waste of time (Goodman, 2013). Despite its popularity in entertainment journalism, hate watching remains largely unexplored in academic literature. Jonathan Gray (2003) argues for the importance of critically examining anti-fans as part of audience studies. He finds that anti-fans have a complex, if oppositional, reading of the text that is often just as critical as that of fans. I propose that educated middle-class viewers use the discourse of hate watching to distance themselves from the trashy TV shows they consume in order to protect their cultural capital from erosion. This research examines the results of my interviews with 18-35-year-old university students, who hate watch.

Queering Italian Media analyzes and offers queer readings of LGBTQIA+ representation in Italian media. The contributors apply various understandings of "queer" and "media" as they discuss the relationship between the political and social lives of queer populations in Italy and investigate their representations in film, news media, television, social media, and viewer-generated media sites. Queering Italian Media examines queer positionality, challenges notions of Italianness as it relates to and is reflected in media, and queers understandings of viewer engagement and participation in media consumption and production.

Or has cultural consumption in contemporary societies become individualised to such a degree that there is no longer any social basis for cultural consumption? They evaluate the 'class-culture homology argument' of Pierre Bourdieu and Herbert Gans; the 'individualisation arguments' of Anthony Giddens, Ulrich Beck and Zygmunt Bauman; and the 'omnivore-univore argument' of Richard Peterson. They also demonstrate that, consistent with Max Weber's class-status distinction, cultural consumption, as a key element of lifestyle, is stratified primarily on the basis of social status rather than by social class.
