Have you ever gone into a doctor's office and come out feeling like a laboratory project rather than a human being? This book offers a refreshing perspective. In Dr. Daniel's forty years in the medical community, he has discovered an important truth: people find more complete healing when treated as integrated persons - with minds as well as bodies, emotions as well as muscles, spirits as well as skin. Through real-life stories and insightful studies, Fountain uses his experience to explore a balanced relationship between faith, medicine, and ultimate spiritual hope.

Modern culture tends to separate medicine and miracles, but their histories are closely intertwined. The Roman Catholic Church recognizes saints through canonization based on evidence that they worked miracles, as signs of their proximity to God. Physicianhistorian Jacalyn Duffin has examined Vatican sources on 1400 miracles from six continents and spanning four centuries. Overwhelmingly the miracles cited in canonizations between 1588 and 1999 are healings, and the majority entail medical care and physician testimony. These remarkable records contain intimate stories of illness, prayer, and treatment, as told by people who rarely leave traces: peasants and illiterates, men and women, old and young. A woman's breast tumor melts away; a man's wounds knit; a lame girl suddenly walks; a dead baby revives. Suspicious of wishful thinking or na ve enthusiasm, skeptical clergy shaped the inquiries to identify recoveries that remain unexplained by the best doctors of the era. The tales of healing are supplemented with substantial testimony from these physicians. Some elements of the miracles change through time. Duffin shows that doctors increase in number; new technologies are embraced quickly; diagnoses shift with altered capabilities. But other aspects of the miracles are stable. The narratives follow a dramatic structure, shaped by the formal questions asked of each witness and by perennial reactions to illness and healing. In this history, medicine and religion emerge as parallel endeavors aimed at deriving meaningful signs from particular instances of human distress -- signs to explain, alleviate, and console in confrontation with suffering and mortality. A lively, sweeping analysis of a fascinating set of records, this book also poses an exciting methodological challenge to historians: miracle stories are a vital source not only on the thoughts and feelings of ordinary people, but also on medical science and its practitioners.

"Ask, and it will be given you; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you" (Mt. 7:7). Most people think miracles only happen in movies or the Bible and their prayer lives reflect this belief as well. Father Stefan Starzynski reminds us through his personal experience and real stories that God is ever present, and that miracles are among the gifts offered to those who petition Him in faith. Father Starzynski's life is an account of God's ability to use imperfect human instruments like him -- and you -- to carry out His will. Father Starzynski recounts numerous episodes when he personally experienced miracles, often in totally unexpected places. His riveting stories of tiny infants facing life-threatening medical conditions, of people battling demons and disease, of his own experience overcoming depression, and more, will inspire, instruct, and provide hope for all. Experience the miraculous testimonies from over twenty individuals and families whose lives have been touched by God through Father Starzynski's ministry, as well as helpful appendices on topics like Medjugorje, Saint Therese, and a section of prayers. "Miracles abound in this heartfelt book. Father Stefan Starzynski takes you on a tour of miracles, big and small, and illustrates how to find them in your own life." --Raymond Arroyo, New York Times best-selling author of Mother Angelica and host of EWTN's "The World Over Live" Author royalties from the sales of Miracles: Healing for a Broken World will be donated to the Paul Stefan Home for Expectant Mothers www.paulstefanhome.org.

Reuben Archer Torrey's inspiring work on God's power to work miracles in our daily lives is presented here in large print, that all readers may comprehend and appreciate its lessons. The question of God's presence in our everyday lives is one which frequently occurs in the minds of Christians. Does He still perform healing miracles upon the faithful on Earth? How does the Lord make himself known among us? Is His presence sometimes obvious, or must we always look closer to see the subtle works of God around us? Although brief, this work of R. A. Torrey seeks to answer these questions definitively and wisely, and throughout the author carries a profound tone that few live to acquire. By the time this book was published in 1924, Torrey was already in his late sixties, and lifetime of achievement as a writer, a preacher, and above all a Christian lay behind him; his rich educative wisdom was thus appreciated by many believers. Today, many of Torrey's finest writings are again finding their way to Christians wishing for new perspectives upon matters of faith. Divine Healing, which cites scripture to aid its explanations of the properties of healing miracles described in the Bible, retains both its relevance and poignancy in the modern day.
