In the early 1960s, Gerard Fromanger began painting black and white figures in reaction to the dominance of abstract art in Paris at the time. In 1965, he became involved with Figuration Narrative, or Nouvelle Figuration, and was soon one of its leading figures. Each of his works is a lesson in painting, skilled and rich in reference as well as joyous and sensuous in form. This book examines the interconnections between art, phenomenology, and cognitive studies. Contributors question the binary oppositions generally drawn between visuality and agency, sensing and thinking, phenomenal art and politics, phenomenology and structuralism, and subjective involvement and social belonging.
