From its early beginnings at SLAC in the 1970's, the study of nucleon spin structure using polarized lepton beams and polarized nucleon targets has become increasingly important in nuclear and particle physics, with current experiments at several of the world's high energy laboratories (CERN, DESY and SLAC) and with enormous related theoretical studies. The understanding of the fascinating but complicated problem of nucleon spin structure has progressed substantially, but fundamental questions remain and it can be confidently predicted that future activity will be high. The Erice Course on The Spin Structure of the Nucleon covered both the experimental and theoretical aspects of the subject, and this volume includes the lectures given at the School. In many cases the lecture material has been extended and updated by the authors. In addition, several recent publications on experimental work have been added in an appendix.

The feasibility of using indium seals for large vacuum bell jars has been investigated. It is shown that such seals can be made; however, use of this type seal for repetitive operations is not recommended.

Glycostructures play a highly diverse and crucial role in a myriad of organisms and important systems in biology, physiology, medicine, bioengineering and technology. Only in recent years have the tools been developed to partly understand the highly complex functions and the chemistry behind them, but many facts still remain undiscovered. "All roads lead to carbohydrates ... we cannot do without them." (K.C. Nicolaou). Presently the field is experiencing a "quantum jump". Therefore the editors have drawn together in this three volume set the complete and up-to-date information on glycostructures, their chemistry and chemical biology, and present them in the form of a comprehensive and strictly systematic survey. The texts are furnished by 2.670 figures, chemical structures and reaction schemes (including more than 12.000 individual chemical reactions), and more than 9.000 references.

This volume contains the written versions of invited lectures presented at the 29th "Internationale Universitatswochen fiir Kernphysik" in Schladming, Aus tria, in March 1990. The generous support of our sponsors, the Austrian Ministry of Science and Research, the Government of Styria, and others, made it possible to invite expert lecturers. In choosing the topics of the course we have tried to select some of the currently most fiercely debated aspects of quantum field theory.
