Excerpt from Faith and Modern Thought The occasion of this little volume may be found in the spirit of modern discussion. The title - Faith and Modern Thought - was chosen by the writer long before he knew that a similar subject - Christianity and Modern Thought - had been proposed for a course of lectures in Boston, during the winter of 1875-6. The material is composed, in part, of essays prepared for special occasions, and subsequently published in Quarterly Reviews. If, in defence of certain positions, plain words have been employed, they are in reply to plain words employed in attack. If it be questioned whether the spirit of the book is in too close sympathy with the spirit of the time, the author has no reply to make; if it be asserted, he has no apology to offer. Earnest inquiry everywhere prevails. Old theories are scrutinized; new theories are criticised. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Faith and Modern Thought: Six Lectures The lectures printed in this volume were delivered, under the auspices of the London Intercollegiate Christian Unions, in St. James's Hall, London, during November and December, 1909, to audiences of men and women students of the University. They are now issued in a form convenient for use by those who desire to study the fundamental problems of the Christian Faith. Those who heard the course were impressed by the personality of the lecturer, by the simplicity of his words, the candour of his reasoning and the directness of his appeal. They felt that they were listening to one who, with courage and independence of mind, had faced the issues for himself and who spoke out, without flinching, the truth to which he had fought his way. Excerpt from The Light of Faith: A Defence, in Brief, of Fundamental Christian Truths This volume is made up in larger part of lectures, delivered upon various occasions, and this fact accounts for some few repeti tions of thought, which may be found in its pages. The correspondence printed below explains the origin of the three which first appear. The book deals with problems, from the solution of which no man can escape, and which the truly rational should study carefully and make their best efiort to master in this life. Time, as compared with eternity, is nothing; and, if we interest ourselves so deeply in the passing concerns of this existence, why should we be regard less, as so many are, of the eternity that lies before us? Excerpt from Foundations: A Statement of Christian Belief in Terms of Modern Thought The modern world is asking questions. Christianity and its traditional theology have come down to us from an age very different from our own, an age when the sun and the stars moved round the earth, when the meaning of natural law and evolution was only dimly apprehended, when the psychology of religion, the historical method and the critical study of ancient documents were yet unborn. These things touch the foundations of the old beliefs, and it is about the foundations that the world is asking. The world is calling for religion; but it cannot accept a religion if its theology is out of harmony with science, philosophy, and scholarship. Religion, if it is to dominate life, must satisfy both the head and the heart, a thing which neither obscurantism nor rationalism can do. At such a time it seems most necessary that those who believe that Christianity is no mere picturesque survival of a romantic past, but a real religion with a real message for the present and the future, should set themselves to a careful re-examination, and if need be te - statement, of the foundations of their belief in the light of the knowledge and thought of the day. The present volume, the outcome of an Oxford friendship, is due to the conviction that such a task might be more successfully attempted by a corporate effort than by the labours of separate individuals. The majority of us on many occasions, and all of us more than once, have been able to meet together in conference for mutual criticism of the essays previously circulated in draft form. Four times these conferences have been of the nature of a retreat continued during three or four days, and each essay has been thus discussed at more than one stage before it assumed its present form.
