Excerpt from Fundamentals in Elementary Education The subject matter of this book is a direct outgrowth of the experiences of the Department of Education in the State Normal School at Warrensburg, Missouri, in giving courses in Education to beginners in that subject. During the ten years of the experiment, the major portion of the material has been tried out in more than one hundred fifty classes, taught by well-trained teachers. The book is de signed primarily for students in Teacher-training Classes in Education in high schools, and in Elementary Courses in normal schools; and it is well adapted to Teachers' Reading Circles. It might well be used as an Introductory Course in Education in colleges or in College Courses in normal schools. The author has tried to keep in the foreground the function of the elementary school as the greatest single agency in a democracy for the education of its children, and, while no effort has been made to exhaust the topics concerning elementary schools, an attempt has been made to discuss the fundamental ones with considerable detail and thoroughness. Practically all of the Problems presented at the end of each chapter may be answered from the subject matter contained in the text, and the experiences of the teacher and students. The selected readings are intended chiefly for supplementary purposes, and for those students who have access to a good library. It is needless to state that the writer claims no large degree of originality for the volume, because he has drawn freely upon pedagogical literature as it relates to the elementary school. Excerpt from Principles of Education The present work is the outgrowth of actual class-room experience in teaching the subject for two years in the State Normal School at Milwaukee and eight years in the State Uni versity of Iowa. Previous to this experience, many of the ideas here expressed had been gradually shaping themselves while the author was teaching and supervising in public schools. All of the material has been carefully tested in junior and senior university classes, and much of it in advanced normal school classes. Portions of several chapters have been given many times in teachers' institutes and associations. The distinct aim, however, has been to produce a text-book of college grade for beginners in the study of educational science. Excerpt from The Foundations of Education No one will claim that we have yet attained perfection, either in method or result. We spend vast sums of money, we claim the devotion of a great army of men and women in the schoolroom, great minds are bestowing their very best thought -and no one would withhold a particle of this treasure, this consecration, this energy - yet we are confronted with evils which education has not eliminated, and faults in our national character which seem rather to grow than abate. Excerpt from Essentials in Education The purpose of this book is to present to teachers and all persons interested in education a discussion of some of the fundamental factors in public educa tion in the light of current educational practice. The point of view is distinctly practical. No panaceas are offered and no revolutions in current methods are proposed. While the form of statement may seem dogmatic in some instances, it is hoped that this is not the case to any greater extent than would be inevitable in presenting the convictions of the writer as an outgrowth of twenty-five years of public school work. Many of the chapters are upon subjects which have been presented many times by the writer in talks and addresses to teachers and the general public. This accounts for the informal nature of many statements. It is hoped that the point of view here presented will be helpful to teachers and others interested in education in applying to the solution of present problems the conclusions obtained from a long administrative experience. Grateful acknowledgment is made to Mr. Murray A. Dalman for help in preparing the references and for the illustration of the statistical methods used in Chapter 13. Excerpt from A Text-Book in the Principles of Education IN the following pages I have endeavored to present in a systematic way the outlines of a theory of education from the point of view of evolution. The evolutionary conception has been applied to educational theory more or less consistently by all writers on the subject since the time of Froebel. The development of more and more scientific knowledge in regard to the history of life, of mind, and of society has, however, made possible constant reconstruction of the general princi ples, in terms of which the process of evolution through edu cation is to be conceived. I have tried to draw into a unified scheme what seem to me the essential features of current thought on this subject today. Excerpt from The Principles of Teaching The book demands of students knowledge of the ele ments of psychology, particularly of dynamic psychology. The references entitled 'preparatory' (or their equivalent) will fulfill this prerequisite. These references are to the author's Elements of Psychology, which is in a sense an introduction to the present volume, but any standard course in psychology which gives due emphasis to the laws of mental connections will supply the preparation needed.
