This celebratory publication is an expression of deepest gratitude to Herta Nagl-Docekal. With this volume, colleagues, graduates and friends want to celebrate her collected philosophical works. Her entire life's work has been characterized by both humanitarian and humanist commitment: to seek the principles of justice in the co-existence of human beings, but that philosophy also provides the basic yardstick, to highlight distortions on recent theories. Her philosophical work is alive with the commitment to a philosophy which is compelled to seek the principles of greater justice and solidarity.

This volume contains the proceedings of a panel on the feminist work of Herta Nagl-Docekal, organized by Gertrude Postl within the context of a conference of the Association for Philosophy and Literature (APL). It includes papers on the practical application of Nagl-Docekal's work for feminist counseling services (Bettina Zehetner), on the interconnection of moral philosophy and epistemology (Waltraud Ernst), on feminist aesthetics (Cornelia Esianu), and on Nagl- Docekal's contributions to a feminist philosophy of religion (Brigitte Buchhammer). It concludes with a response by Herta Nagl-Docekal. Brigitte Buchhammer is a Philosopher, teaching at universities in Austria and abroad. In this volume thirteen essays highlight the subject of human rights from different points of view. The guiding questions include the following: Can feminists and gender researchers ground their commitment to greater gender justice in human rights? Is there a single concept of human rights? Do human rights include individual rights or group rights? Are the demands of human rights addressed to institutions or to individuals? Is there an intrinsic moment of Eurocentrism within human rights? Are human rights a moral or legal measure, or somewhere in between? Who is recognized as a human being?

This current volume of the series Women* Philosophers at Work. A Series of SWIP Austria reflects the wide spectrum of the philosophers' research work. 11 essays highlight the subject of the publication from different points of view. The targets and duties of the Society for Women* in Philosophy are as follows: the Society is a non-profit organization to support women* and LGBTIQ-people working in and committed to the study of philosophy in Austria. Its purpose is to advance equal treatment and gender justice for everyone in philosophy, both students and professionals, philosophers at all levels of academia, colleagues in other institutions and also in our society as a whole.

The volume presents theological and religious research that explores women's voices and experiences in the fields of migration, culture and (eco)peacebuilding with the goal to discuss complex and dynamic questions of women's active participation and engagement in these challenges, mainly from the perspective of Central European authors. The chapters address these matters in order to rethink and search for theological and religious responses to the inequalities, prejudices, and conflicts that arise from these crises and look for new ethical paths to mitigate them through interreligious dialogue and religious (eco)peacebuilding

What does it mean to be religious believers for people whose living conditions are defined by an increasingly secularized environment? Is the common distinction between faith and knowledge valid? The 21 essays cover approaches from various fields of the humanities. Some explore post-Kantian thoughts, discussing, i.a., American Pragmatism, M. Buber, M. Horkheimer, H. Putnam, J. Habermas, Ch. Taylor and variants of deconstruction, while other essays focus on ways in which the conflict between agnostics and seekers is addressed in US literary works, as in Fl. O’Connor, W. Percy, N. Hawthorne, J. Updike and in novels dealing with pandemics, for instance by L. Wright, E. M. Wiseman and R. Cook. Historical studies examine the intermingling of the sacred and the secular in the American South and neo-scholastic objections to modernity. Theological issues are being re-framed in essays discussing the relevance of pluralism, the relation of religious conviction and public opinion, the situation of scientists who believe and the thoughts of N. Frye and M. McLuhan. Finally, essays pay attention to religious aspects in works of art, e.g. in Ukrainian poetry, G. Mahler’s symphonies and in a TV show presenting new “American Gods” of globalization.

Arthur Schopenhauer made the momentous decision to become a philosopher when he was approximately 22 years old. Prior to that decision, he had been studying medicine at the university in Göttingen. By that age, however, he had concluded that life was a troublesome affair. So he resolved to spend his life reflecting upon it. Schopenhauer was doggedly determined to persevere in what he considered his mission in life, to reflect on the “ever-disquieting puzzle of existence,” to ascertain the meaning of living in a world steeped in suffering and death. He was confident that eventually his work would be recognized, a confidence that enabled him to weather laboring in relative philosophical obscurity for some forty years. What initiated the dawn of Schopenhauer’s fame was a review of his philosophy that appeared in a British journal in 1853, and ever since that time, Schopenhauer drew a readership, one broader than most Western philosophers. He is read not simply and solely by professional philosophers, but also by the wider learned world. Indeed, some have claimed that he is the most widely read Western philosopher. This second edition of Historical Dictionary of Schopenhauer's Philosophy contains a chronology, an introduction, an appendix, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 300 cross-referenced entries on all of Schopenhauer’s books, significant philosophical ideas and concepts, as well as entries covering significant figures in his life and those influenced by this thinking.. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about Arthur Schopenhauer.
