Excerpt from Forging of Iron and Steel: A Text Book for the Use of Students in Colleges, Secondary Schools and the Shop In the preparation of this book, the author has endeavored to treat the forging of iron and steel, and the hardening and tempering of tool steel, simply enough for the High School boy and at the same time thoroughly and systematically enough for the veteran smith. A chapter has been introduced on the history of forging since it is thought to be of interest to all engaged in the work of forging metals. Another chapter on the manufacture of Iron and Steel has been inserted because it is believed that the workman should have some knowledge of the metals, and how they are obtained. It is not thought necessary or advisable to go deeply into the subject of metallurgy, or to introduce metallurgical theory. No attempt to treat specific exercises has been made; the aim has been to bring out principles. All the methods used toward this end have been thoroughly tried out during ten years of experience in teaching and supervising Manual Training. Those wishing a course of study by which to work, or to use in outlining such a plan, will find in the Appendix a course of study which the author has tried out successfully with several hundred pupils in high school, and with students in college. In order to obtain the best information possible, the author has consulted nearly every book published on the subject.
