This book was written by academic's and practitioners who have lead the implementation of highway management processes and tools at several major corporations. The contents of this book have been presented in an interesting and enjoyable way, enhanced by real pictures of highway projects and pavement maintenance. This book contains five chapters, the first chapter entitled MAINTENANCE MANAGEMENT: It was to clarify the concept and importance of maintenance and management professionally and smoothly, While the title of the second chapter is the HIGHWAY PROJECTS, and provided a detailed explanation of the management and implementation of highways, while reviewing the types and importance in the construction sector. The third chapter, entitled PAVEMENT DETERIORATION: The researchers reviewed the types of DETERIORATION in the riged and asphalt pavement, and explained the methods of treatment and maintenance necessary for each type. While the fourth chapter was entitled HIGHY WAY MAINTENANCE OPERATIONS: It reviewed the methods of maintenance and importance in highway project, the fifth chapter entitled: PAVEMENT MAINTENANCE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM: This chapter reviewed the most important global strategies in the management of pavement maintenance.

The states of the world invest very much money for the construction and maintenance of roads since roads are considered very important in the transportation sector as an indispensable tool. Roads are used to transport goods and persons from one place to anotherSo the process of maintenance management for roads networks is considered very important because it needs various kinds of resources. This process must be completed with a very high degree of accuracy to achieve more profit of available resources and to keep on the acceptable level of service for these road networks.therefore, the significance of this book lies in dealing with an important area of the constructional and urban development, which is the flexible pavement maintenance operations.

This synthesis will be of interest to highway agency executive management including administrative, budget, and finance personnel; pavement design, construction, and maintenance engineers; and maintenance operations personnel, including supervisors and maintenance crew leaders. This synthesis describes the state of the practice with respect to setting a coherent strategy of cost-effective preventive maintenance for extending pavement life. This report of the Transportation Research Board describes the practices of state, local, and provincial transportation agencies that are attempting to minimize the life-cycle costs of pavements and are identifying, during the design of the pavement rehabilitation, reconstruction, or construction projects, the future preventive maintenance treatments and the timing and funding for those treatments. It includes a review of domestic literature and a survey of current practices in North America. The appendices include a primer on pavement design and construction, the benefits of preventive maintenance of pavements, a summary of the questionnaire data collected, a simulation of pavement management strategies, and an example process to demonstrate the cost- effectiveness of preventive maintenance.

In the early 1980's the Texas State Department of Highways and Public Transportation implemented its Pavement Evaluation System. This system was designed to (a) document trends in network condition and (b) generate a one year estimate of rehabilitation funding. The information generated by this system has been used for many purposes including funding request, project prioritization and documenting the consequences of changes in funding levels. However, a limitation of this system was its inability to project future conditions and make multi-year needs estimates. This is the subject of this research report. Regression equations were built for each major distress type from a pavement data base containing a 10 year history of condition trends from over 350 random sections in Texas. These equations were used to age individual sections which did not qualify for maintenance or rehabilitation in a particular year. A simple decision tree was developed to estimate the maintenance requirements if rehabilitation is not warranted. This decision tree represents the opinions of experienced maintenance engineers. A case study and sensitivity analysis are presented.
