PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY, 9e, International Edition, uses the combined expertise of four respected geographers to show how Earth's physical geography impacts humans, and how humans impact Earth's physical geography. The text emphasizes three essential themes to demonstrate the major roles for the discipline -- Geography as a Physical Science, Geography as the Spatial Science, and Geography as Environmental Science. With a renewed focus on examining relationships and processes among Earth systems, this text will help you understand how the various systems interrelate and how humans are an integral aspect of geography. Historically the first book to take a conservation approach, the authors continue to emphasize the theme of environmental and human impacts.

Excerpt from First Book of Physical Geography In preparing my Elementary Physical Geography, I attempted to present the subject in such a way as to put it forward in its more modern aspect, and particularly to include the new physiography, or science of land form. An effort was made to cover the entire ground in a very elementary way; but at once the difficulty arose that the field was so large, that even to present the subject in an elementary manner would require a good-sized book. To avoid this there were two things possible: one to omit some parts and curtail others; the other to commence the consideration of some subjects with the assumption that either the scholars knew the preliminary points, or that the teacher could explain them. Both of these methods of shortening the book were followed, but even then it grew to a size entirely too large for those schools in which the subject has a minor place. The result has been, that although this book has met with a success wholly unexpected, many teachers who wish to give instruction in the new physical geography are unable to make use of it. Over the past twenty years, geography as an academic discipline has become more and more reflective, asking the key questions 'What are we doing?' 'Why are we doing it?'. These questions have, so far, been more enthusiastically taken up by human geography rather than physical geography. Contemporary Meanings in Physical Geography aims to redress the balance. Written and edited by a distinguished group of physical geographers, Contemporary Meanings in Physical Geography comprises of a collection of international writer's thoughts which reveal personal motivations, and look at tensions in the worlds of meaning in which physical geography is involved. How are the meanings of the physical environment derived? Is the future of physical geography one where the only, or at least the dominant, meanings are framed in the contexts of environmental issues. Covering a diverse and lively selection of topics, the contributors of this book offer guides to the contemporary debates in the philosophy of physical geography, and introduce the reader to its wider cultural significance. This book is an essential companion to anyone studying, or with an interest in, physical geography.

It is partly in the hope of meeting the needs of these, that I have undertaken the prep aration of this smaller book, from which still other sub jeeta are omitted, but in which the attempt is made to start from the beginning, and make every topic thoroughly clear.
