'Figuring Figures' is a tour for children through the world of the human form as depicted by artists from around the globe and across the ages. This volume shows the work of artists of thousands of years ago and of our own time. It shows an ancient carving from Mesopotamia of a husband and wife holding hands, and an early twentieth century painting of Russian children in a playground. It shows how figures can be made with just a few lines - from a piece of wood or some paper - from a bit of clay or iron. And, it shows how figures can be huge or tiny - in scale or out of scale - running or staying still - dancing or playing.
