TO old age 24, 517 deaths were referred; the mortality thus returned was equal to 816 per million living, and showed a further decline from the rates in recent years. Premature birth was the assigned cause of deaths, or 17° 79 per 1000 children born. From the year 1884 down to the end of 1893 there had been a continuous increase in the mortality from premature birth, but in 1894 the proportion showed a decline, and was below that recorded in either of the three preceding years.
