Festschrift

Turul Ansay is an outstanding figure in the landscape of comparative law. In a field that holds ever-growing promise for the future, he continues to manifest his tireless spirit in a wide arc of influential activity. The spectrum of his achievement encompasses many areas of substantive law as well as legal education. He is noted also for his direct contributions to the national legal systems of more than a few countries notably that of his native Turkey contributions characterized by the deep integrity that a truly comparative perspective brings. This impressive Festschrift in honour of Dr. Ansay's 75th birthday presents signal contributions by no less than thiry-six of his colleagues and fellow-comparatists, all of them well-known scholars in their fields. "The Well-Tempered Festschrift" is a reading of "Music Preferred: Essays in Musicology, Cultural History and Analysis in Honour of Harry White", edited by Lorraine Byrne Bodley and published by Hollitzer Verlag in 2018. "The Well-Tempered Festschrift" reflects on each of the essays in "Music Preferred" in turn, and it also accounts for the circumstances in which Harry White met the contributors to "Music Preferred" throughout the course of his working life. "The Well-Tempered Festschrift" is thus a musicological memoir as well as a detailed review of the contents of "Music Preferred", dedicated to the friends whose work is pictured within. It responds to the liber amicorum of "Music Preferred" with an answering echo that may well be unique in the annals of scholarly Festschriften.

From the Introduction: This volume is dedicated to the remarkable career of Professor Peter Schmidt and the role he has played in mentoring us, his PhD students. Peter’s accomplishments are legendary among his students and the profession. Each of the papers in this Festschrift is a research work executed by a former PhD student of Peter’s, from his days at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to his time at Michigan State University. Most of the papers were presented at The Conference in Honor of Peter Schmidt, June 30 - July 2, 2011. The conference was largely attended by his former students and one current student, who traveled from as far as Europe and Asia to honor Peter. This was a conference to celebrate Peter’s contribution to our contributions. By “our contributions” we mean the research papers that make up this Festschrift and the countless other publications by his students represented and not represented in this volume. Peter’s students may have their families to thank for much that is positive in their lives. However, if we think about it, our professional lives would not be the same without the lessons and the approaches to decision making that we learned from Peter. We spent our days together at Peter’s conference and the months since reminded of these aspects of our personalities and life goals that were enhanced, fostered, and nurtured by the very singular experiences we have had as Peter’s students. We recognized in 2011 that it was unlikely we would all be together again to celebrate such a wonderful moment in ours and Peter’s lives and pledged then to take full advantage of it. We did then, and we are now in the form of this volume.

This volume consists of 22 research papers by leading researchers in Probability and Statistics. Many of the papers are focused on themes that Professor Bhattacharya has published on research. Topics of special interest include nonparametric inference, nonparametric curve fitting, linear model theory, Bayesian nonparametrics, change point problems, time series analysis and asymptotic theory.This volume presents state-of-the-art research in statistical theory, with an emphasis on nonparametric inference, linear model theory, time series analysis and asymptotic theory. It will serve as a valuable reference to the statistics research community as well as to practitioners who utilize methodology in these areas of emphasis.

Due to his major contributions in qualitative inquiries, Norman K. Denzin is regarded as ‘the Father of Qualitative Inquiries.’ Volume 55 of Studies in Symbolic Interaction is a compilation of writings published in his honor.

Bethsaida, a fishing town on the north end of the Sea of Galilee, plays a prominent role in the Gospels, was home for several of Jesus’ disciples, and was the location of the feeding of the 5,000 and many of Jesus’ other healings. However, the Golden Age of Biblical Archaeology all but ignored this important site until 1987 when a young Israeli archaeologist, Rami Arav, undertook a probe revealing early Roman pottery, coins, and the remains of domestic buildings. This led to a thirty-two-year-long research project at Bethsaida, adding to our knowledge of the Historical Jesus and his disciples, and acting as a window into the world of common first-century men and women going about their daily lives in the realm of the family of the Emperor Augustus and the Herodians. The big surprise was that layers below the surface (and a thousand years earlier), there also appeared a major iron-age capital city of the Geshurites with a magnificent palace, impregnable city walls, a massive four-chamber gate system, and many religious symbols. This volume honors the work of Arav, who tirelessly dedicated himself to this dig, establishing the Bethsaida Excavations Project and bringing together a consortium of Universities and Colleges and a diverse team of international scholars who have joined in collaborative research to uncover the story of Bethsaida. In this volume, a representative selection of Bethsaida scholars shares their research to demonstrate the success of Arav’s venture spanning over three decades.
