This document replaces and updates the 2002 'Family violence intervention guidelines: child and partner abuse'. It aims to support health care providers in New Zealand to make safe and effective interventions to assist victims of interpersonal violence and abuse within routine health care. It presents a six step model for identifying and responding to family violence within health care settings, and also outlines an integrated response to addressing the co-occurrence of partner abuse and child abuse.

The Guidelines have been developed to help health professionals to deal with interpersonal violence. The guidelines were produced in consultation with health professional leaders and Māori and Pacific peoples. These groups were concerned that health workers ensure the safety and well being of both women and children when abuse occurs in the same family. The integration of child and partner abuse intervention strategies is a major achievement of the guidelines.

Reports of mistreated children, domestic violence, and abuse of elderly persons continue to strain the capacity of police, courts, social services agencies, and medical centers. At the same time, myriad treatment and prevention programs are providing services to victims and offenders. Although limited research knowledge exists regarding the effectiveness of these programs, such information is often scattered, inaccessible, and difficult to obtain. Violence in Families takes the first hard look at the successes and failures of family violence interventions. Some families are dangerous environments. Most practitioners in social work, child protection, and hospital and community medicine, as well as the police, will know from their professional experience the extent of spouse abuse, child abuse, sibling violence and maltreatment of the elderly within the family setting.
