Mrs. Maxwell Scott to make a selection for publication from the correspondence preserved at Abbotsford it was intended that the volumes now given to the public should be confined to letters addressed by Sir Walter to members of his own family but other letters which passed between him and some of his dearest friends having, through the courtesy of their representatives, been placed at my disposal, I felt that they would add greatly to the interest of the work, and many of them have accordingly been introduced.
