Factorization Of Matrix Functions And Singular Integral Operators

A few years aga the authors started a project of a book on the theory of systems of one-dimensional singular integral equa tions which was planned as a continuation of the monograph by one of the authors and N. Ya. Krupnik ~~ concerning scalar equa tions. This set of notes was initiated as a chapter dealing with problems of factorization of matrix functions vis-a-vis appli cations to systems of singular integral equations. Working systematically onthischapter and adding along the way new points of view, new proofs and results, we finally saw that the material connected with factorizations is of independent interest and we decided to publish this chapter as aseparate volume. In fact, because of recent activity, the amount of material was quite large and we quickly learned that we cannot cover all of the results in complete detail. We have tried to include a represen tative variety of all kinds of methods, techniques,results and applications. Apart of the current work exposes results from the Russian literature which have never appeared in English translation. We have also decided to reflect some of the recent results which make interesting connections between factorization of matrix functions and systems theory. The field remains very active and many results and connec tions are still not weIl understood. These notes should be viewed as a stepping stone to further development. The authors hope that sometime they will return to complete their original plan.

This volume contains the proceedings of the International Workshop on Operator Theory and Applications held at the University of Algarve in Faro, Portugal, September 12-15, in the year 2000. The main topics of the conference were !> Factorization Theory; !> Factorization and Integrable Systems; !> Operator Theoretical Methods in Diffraction Theory; !> Algebraic Techniques in Operator Theory; !> Applications to Mathematical Physics and Related Topics. A total of 94 colleagues from 21 countries participated in the conference. The major part of participants came from Portugal (32), Germany (17), Israel (6), Mexico (6), the Netherlands (5), USA (4) and Austria (4). The others were from Ukraine, Venezuela (3 each), Spain, Sweden (2 each), Algeria, Australia, Belorussia, France, Georgia, Italy, Japan, Kuwait, Russia and Turkey (one of each country). It was the 12th meeting in the framework of the IWOTA conferences which started in 1981 on an initiative of Professors 1. Gohberg (Tel Aviv) and J. W. Helton (San Diego). Up to now, it was the largest conference in the field of Operator Theory in Portugal.

Many problems of the engineering sciences, physics, and mathematics lead to con volution equations and their various modifications. Convolution equations on a half-line can be studied by having recourse to the methods and results of the theory of Toeplitz and Wiener-Hopf operators. Convolutions by integrable kernels have continuous symbols and the Cauchy singular integral operator is the most prominent example of a convolution operator with a piecewise continuous symbol. The Fredholm theory of Toeplitz and Wiener-Hopf operators with continuous and piecewise continuous (matrix) symbols is well presented in a series of classical and recent monographs. Symbols beyond piecewise continuous symbols have discontinuities of oscillating type. Such symbols emerge very naturally. The present edition differs from the original German one mainly in the following addi tional material: weighted norm inequalities for maximal functions and singular opera tors (§ 12, Chap. XI), polysingular integral operators and pseudo-differential operators (§§ 7, 8, Chap. XII), and spline approximation methods for solving singular integral equations (§ 4, Chap. XVII). Furthermore, we added two subsections on polynomial approximation methods for singular integral equations over an interval or with dis continuous coefficients (Nos. 3.6 and 3.7, Chap. XVII). In many places we incorporated new results which, in the vast majority, are from the last five years after publishing the German edition (note that the references are enlarged by about 150 new titles). S. G. Mikhlin wrote §§ 7, 8, Chap. XII, and the other additions were drawn up by S. Prossdorf. We wish to express our deepest gratitude to Dr. A. Bottcher and Dr. R. Lehmann who together translated the text into English carefully and with remarkable expertise.

This book contains the proceedings of the International Workshop on Operator Theory and Applications held in Faro, Portugal, September 12 to 15, 2000. It includes 20 selected articles centered on the analysis of various classes of singular operators, the factorization of operator and matrix functions, algebraic methods in approximation theory, and applications in diffraction theory. Some papers are related to topics from fractional calculus, complex analysis, operator algebras, and partial differential equations.

This volume comprises the specially prepared lecture notes of a a Summer School on "Factorization and Integrable Systems" held in September 2000 at the University of Algarve in Portugal. The main aim of the school was to review the modern factorization theory and its application to classical and quantum integrable systems. The program consisted of a number of short courses given by leading experts in the field.

These proceedings comprise a large part of the papers presented at the In ternational Conference Factorization, Singular Operators and related problems, which was held from January 28 to February 1, 2002, at the University of th Madeira, Funchal, Portugal, to mark Professor Georgii Litvinchuk's 70 birth day. Experts in a variety of fields came to this conference to pay tribute to the great achievements of Professor Georgii Litvinchuk in the development of vari ous areas of operator theory. The main themes of the conference were focussed around the theory of singular type operators and factorization problems, but other topics such as potential theory and fractional calculus, to name but a couple, were also presented. The goal of the conference was to bring together mathematicians from var ious fields within operator theory and function theory in order to highlight recent advances in problems many of which were originally studied by Profes sor Litvinchuk and his scientific school. A second aim was to stimulate in ternational collaboration even further and promote the interaction of different approaches in current research in these areas. The Proceedings will be of great interest to researchers in Operator The ory, Real and Complex Analysis, Functional and Harmonic Analysis, Potential Theory, Fractional Calculus and other areas, as well as to graduate students looking for the latest results.
