Giving students opportunities to read like historians has the potential to move their thinking and understanding of history in monumental ways. Exploring Relationships and Connections to Others: Teaching Universal Themes through Young Adult Novels offers readers opportunities to explore the most common universal themes taught in secondary English Language Arts classrooms using contemporary young adult literature. Authors discuss adolescence and adolescent readers, young adult literature and its possibilities in the classroom, and ways to teach thematic analysis. The book provides context, traditional approaches to teaching, and examples of thematic explorations of each of the chosen themes. Chapters include developed teaching instructional units to study four universal themes: love and loss; friendship and betrayal; hate, its destructive consequences, and healing; and dreams and hope for tomorrow. This book explores how mental illness is portrayed in 21st-century young adult fiction and how selected works can help teachers, librarians, and mental health professionals to more effectively address the needs of students combating mental illness. It offers extensive analysis of contemporary young adult fiction featuring youth with mental illness to help school and youth services librarians make informed collection development and readers' advisory decisions; examines the symptoms and warning signs of mental illness in adolescents in addition to how various disorders are diagnosed and treated; offers strategies for teachers and librarians to integrate quality texts into middle and high school curricula and into community initiatives aimed at confronting the stigma associated with mental illness; follows a standardized chapter format that makes it easy for readers to learn about the books and the mental illnesses they highlight; [and] provides an extended list of resources at the end of each chapter that includes additional young adult fiction and nonfiction as well as adult fiction texts.

This dissertation provides a detailed exploration of my creative process in the development and writing of my original young adult historical novel. Using excerpts from my narrative, I explore elements of craft, giving particular attention to the mining of ideas, the three-act structure, character development, chapter arcs and plot points. These features are discussed in relation to the ways in which they engage the adolescent and enrich the reading experience. Magical realism is investigated with regard to how it is incorporated into my narrative. This writing also includes an overview of how historical fiction is relevant for the modern reader. I outline my classroom strategies for encouraging students to appreciate young adult literature and generate their own creative writing in this genre.
