Evaluation Of Telematics As A Fraud Detection Tool For Vehicle Fleet Managers

Managing occupational fraud is a challenge for every organization. The misappropriation of assets through the abuse of company credit cards is one way employees commit occupational fraud. This paper will discuss the abuse of company credit cards issued for the purpose of purchasing fuel for fleet vehicles. Current fraud detection techniques do not adequately confirm the existence of fraud in fuel transactions. Telematics is the technology used in global positioning systems (GPS) and vehicle tracking systems. This paper will research telematics technology and determine if it can be used as a tool to prevent, detect, or investigate fuel fraud within a vehicle fleet. The results of this study illustrate the potential for telematics information to reduce an organization's exposure to this type of fraud by enhancing existing audits with the addition of GPS information. Furthermore, telematics information provides an opportunity for future researchers to develop predictive models for the detection of fraudulent fuel transactions using test data. The automotive industry appears close to substantial change engendered by “self-driving” technologies.
