Excerpt from Essentials in Early European History The recommendations of the Committee of Five of the American Historical Association and the appearance of the New York State Regents Syllabus in History first encouraged the author to offer these essentials in early European history for Part I of the course in Modern History. Since the publication of the first edition, the sub-committee on social science of the Commission on the Reorganization of Secondary Education appointed by the National Educational Association, in Bulletin 41 of the United States Bureau of Education, made definite recommendations for the division of European History into two units, the first, European History to the Eighteenth Century with English Colonial History, the second, European History from the Eighteenth Century to the present day. The Department of Education in New Jersey is in full accord with this course of study. In New York State the newer courses are being widely adopted, and in New England there is a strong movement in their direction. In the selection of these essentials, many details formerly deemed vital to a knowledge of history have been purposely omitted in an attempt to mirror the customs and life of the people and to explain the meaning of the great economic, social, and political movements of ancient, medieval, and early modern times, always having in mind their influence on present civilization. What is Europe? Firstly, of course, it is a continent made up of countless disparate peoples, races and nations, and governed by different ideas, philosophies, religions and attitudes. Nonetheless, it has a common thread of history running through it, stitching the lands and peoples of its past and present together into one fabric and held together by the continent's great institutions, such as the Church of Rome, the Holy Roman Empire, the European Union, individual monarchies, trade organisations and social movements. Europe, however, is also an idea. From almost the beginning of time, men have harboured aspirations to make this vast territory one. The Romans came close and a few centuries later, the foundations for a great European state were laid with the creation of the Holy Roman Empire - an empire different to any other in that it enjoyed the approval of God, through the Church in Rome. Napoleon overreached himself in attempting to create a European-wide Empire - as did Adolf Hitler. Now, however, Europe is as close as it ever has been to being one entity, yet we Europeans still cling to our national independence. In A Short History of Europe Gordon Kerr provides a coherent map of the jumbled history of Europe and the European idea that has brought us to this point.

'Early Modern' is a term applied to the period which falls between the end of the middle ages and the beginning of the nineteenth century. This book provides a comprehensive introduction to Europe in this period, exploring the changes and transitions involved in the move towards modernity. Nine newly commissioned chapters under the careful editorship of Euan Cameron cover social, political, economic, and cultural perspectives, all contributing to a full and vibrant picture of Europe during this time. The chapters are organized thematically, and consider the evolving European economy and society, the impact of new ideas on religion, and the emergence of modern political attitudes and techniques. The text is complemented with many illustrations throughout to give a feel of the changes in life beyond the raw historical data.
