Excerpt from Essays, Moral, Political, and Literary, Vol. 1 of 2 Most of the principles, and reasonings, contained in this volume, were published in a work in three volumes, called A Treatise of Human Nature A work which the Author had projected before he College, and which he wrote and published not long after. But not finding it successful, he was sensible of his error in going to the press too early, and he cast the whole anew in the following pieces, where some negligences in his former reasoning and more in the expres sion, are, he hopes, corrected. Yet several writers, who have honoured the Author's Philosophy with answers, have taken care to direct all their batteries against the juvenile work, which the Author never acknowledged, and have affected to triumph in any advantages, which, they imagined. They had obtained over it: A practice very contrary to all rules of candour and fairodealing, and a strong instance of those polemical artifices, which a bigotted zeal thinks itself author ised to employ. Henceforth, the Author desires, that the following Pieces may alone be regarded as containing his philosophical senments and principles) About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Translator names not noted above: John Florio and Thomas Kingsmill Abbott. Originally published between 1909 and 1917 under the name "Harvard Classics," this stupendous 51-volume set-a collection of the greatest writings from literature, philosophy, history, and mythology-was assembled by American academic CHARLES WILLIAM ELIOT (1834-1926), Harvard University's longest-serving president. Also known as "Dr. Eliot's Five Foot Shelf," it represented Eliot's belief that a basic liberal education could be gleaned by reading from an anthology of works that could fit on five feet of bookshelf. Volume XXXII features works of French, German, and Italian philosophy and literary criticism from the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries: [ "That We Should Not Judge of Our Happiness Until After Our Death," "That to Philosophize Is to Learn How to Die," "Of the Institution and Education of Children," "Of Friendship," and "Of Books," by Montaigne [ "Montaigne" and "What is a Classic?" by Charles Augustin Sainte-Beuve [ "The Poetry of the Celtic Races" by Ernest Renan [ "The Education of the Human Race" by Cotthold Ephraim Lessing [ "Letters Upon the Aesthetic Education of Man" by J.C. This volume brings together Nussbaum's published papers on the relationship between literature and philosophy, especially moral philosophy. The papers, many of them previously inaccessible to non-specialist readers, deal with such fundamental issues as the relationship between style and content in the exploration of ethical issues; the nature of ethical attention and ethical knowledge and their relationship to written forms and styles; and the role of the emotions in deliberation and self-knowledge. Nussbaum investigates and defends a conception of ethical understanding which involves emotional as well as intellectual activity, and which gives a certain type of priority to the perception of particular people and situations rather than to abstract rules. She argues that this ethical conception cannot be completely and appropriately stated without turning to forms of writing usually considered literary rather than philosophical. It is consequently necessary to broaden our conception of moral philosophy in order to include these forms. Featuring two new essays and revised versions of several previously published essays, this collection attempts to articulate the relationship, within such a broader ethical inquiry, between literary and more abstractly theoretical elements.

This volume brings together scholars in classics, political philosophy, and rhetoric to analyze prudence as a distinctive and vital form of political intelligence. Through case studies from each of the major periods in the history of prudence, the authors identify neglected resources for political judgement in today's conditions of pluralism and interdependency. Three assumptions inform these essays: the many dimensions of prudence cannot be adequately represented in the lexicon of any single discipline; the Aristotelian focus on prudence as rational calculation needs to be balanced by the Ciceronian emphasis on prudence as discursive performance embedded in familiar social practices; and understanding prudence requires attention to how it operates thorough the communicative media and public discourses that constitute the political community.
