THE greater number of the poems in this volume were written before my brother had reached his twenty-third birthday. 1 Seven months from that date his brief life of joyous activity was brought to an untimely. close. Then the best intellects and best hearts of his University, desiring to perpetuate his works and do honour to his memory, asked permission to publish a selection from his manuscripts, and, with a generous sympathy, named me--then but a boy--as the person to c_l whom the duty of selecting and editing them? should be entrusted. Circumstances rendered it inexpedient to swell the wished-for volume 1 with many untried poems; and a few only were chosen from his multitudinous papers. These 1 were introduced to the world with a short j$ biographical preface by one of his chief friends, darkened, at the time, and troubled by his loss; and the minor pieces were arranged in such order as seemed best to illustrate that sketch. The poems were greeted with a welcome warmer and more general than the most sanguine of us, his companions and kinsfolk, could have hoped for the posthumous works of a writer known only to a few. Yet it was felt that in that volume but little of the young Poet's life, character, and achievement had been revealed. I now bind up a larger swathe, for the occasion for doing so seems to have arrived. The reader to whom the First Edition is a familiar book, will distinguish as new to him very many pieces which are printed here. Most of these I have transcribed from his various note-books; a few of them, of which he had destroyed all traces, I have written down from memory.
