Optical networks have been in commercial deployment since the early 1980s as a result of advances in optical, photonic, and material technologies. Although the initial deployment was based on silica ?ber with a single wavelength modulated at low data rates, it was quickly demonstrated that ?ber can deliver much more bandwidth than any other transmission medium, twisted pair wire, coaxial cable, or wireless. Since then, the optical network evolved to include more exciting technologies, gratings, optical ?lters, optical multiplexers, and optical ampli?ers so that today a single ?ber can transport an unprecedented aggregate data rate that exceeds Tbps, and this is not the upper limit yet. Thus, the ?ber optic network has been the network of choice, and it is expected to remain so for many generationsto come, for both synchronousand asynchronouspayloads; voice, data, video, interactive video, games, music, text, and more. In the last few years, we have also witnessed an increase in network attacks as a result of store andforwardcomputer-basednodes. These attackshave manymaliciousobjectives:harvestsomeone else’s data, impersonate another user, cause denial of service, destroy ?les, and more. As a result, a new ?eld in communicationis becomingimportant, communicationnetworksand informationse- rity. In fact, the network architect and system designer is currently challenged to include enhanced features such as intruder detection, service restoration and countermeasures, intruder avoidance, and so on. In all, the next generation optical network is intelligent and able to detect and outsmart malicious intruders.

Optical components play a crucial role in the functioning and efficiency of intelligent optical networks, which are advanced communication systems designed to optimize data transmission over optical fibers. These networks enable high-speed data transfer, enhanced bandwidth capacity, and improved network management. Optical Transceivers: Optical transceivers are devices that combine both a transmitter and a receiver in a single module. They convert electrical signals into optical signals for transmission over fiber and vice versa. Transceivers come in various types, such as Small Form-factor Pluggable (SFP), QSFP (Quad Small Form-factor Pluggable), and CFP (C form-factor pluggable), each with specific data rates and applications. Optical Amplifiers: Optical amplifiers are used to boost the optical signals to extend the transmission distance without converting them back to electrical signals. Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifiers (EDFAs) are commonly used in intelligent optical networks to amplify signals in the C-band and L-band. Optical Splitters/Couplers: These components divide or combine optical signals, allowing one input to be split into multiple outputs or multiple inputs to be combined into one output. Splitters are essential for distributing signals in Passive Optical Networks (PONs) and wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) systems. Wavelength Division Multiplexers (WDM): WDM technology enables the transmission of multiple wavelengths (or colors) of light simultaneously over a single optical fiber. This greatly increases the network's capacity by utilizing different wavelengths to carry different data streams. Optical Filters: Optical filters are used to selectively pass or block specific wavelengths of light. They are crucial for isolating individual channels in WDM systems and for filtering out unwanted noise or signals. Reconfigurable Optical Add-Drop Multiplexers (ROADMs): ROADMs allow dynamic reconfiguration of optical channels, enabling network operators to remotely add or remove wavelengths as needed without disrupting the entire network.

This book provides a broad overview of IP over WDM technologies, as seen by a group of experts participating in the e-Photon/ONeC and BONE Networks of Excellence funded within the VIth and VIIth Research Framework Programmes (FP6 and FP7) of the European Union. Both Networks of Excellence are aimed at the integration of research teams active on optical networks at a pan-European level, with the creation of virtual centers of excellence in optical networks, te- nologies, and services. The working groups on optical core networks gathered about a 100 researchers from more than 20 universities and research institutions in Europe. The multifaceted viewpoints available in this community on the current state and future evolution of large WDM networking infrastructures are reported in this book. The book is organized in chapters, with chapter editors, listed on pp–, having the responsibility to collect and harmonize contributions by different - search groups. The whole work was made possible by the coordination efforts of Javier Aracil and Franco Callegati, leaders, at the time when the book writing was begun, of the working groups on optical core networks and on optical burst swit- ing in e-Photon/ONeC. We are thankful to them for their efforts. We hope that this manuscript will serve as a valuable reference for students and practitioners in the ?eld of optical networking.

Dynamic and flexible optical networks are among the evolution scenarios of the optical transport networks. These form the basis of the new generation of optical networks of tomorrow and enable the effective deployment of services such as cloud computing. This evolution is intended to provide flexibility and automation to the optical layer. However, it results in additional complexity, particularly in terms of the management and control of this new network generation. Until recently, the standardized routing and signaling protocols have been taking into account several optical parameters like the spectral bandwidth information, modulation format, and optical regeneration. However, other parameters (e.g., link optical powers, gain of optical amplifiers) are still required in order to efficiently operate large optical networks. In this context, there is a need to study the existing optical networks and the different integration methods of the photonic layer in a control plane. The goal is to get an automatic optical network that is flexible, programmable, and at the same time efficient from an economical and operational perspective. The use of flexible grid technology has an impact on existing optical networks, where almost all the equipment must be replaced, resulting in an additional cost to network operators. In this work, we study the current optical networks and evaluate the impact of flexibility on the existing infrastructures. Then, we identify several physical parameters to be controlled and propose protocol extensions in order to integrate these parameters in the GMPLS control plane. In addition, we develop the routing and signaling algorithms that allow the implementation of an efficient control plane that addresses the need for flexibility. Finally, the set of our proposals and solutions are evaluated on multiple network topologies with different traffic patterns in order to validate their relevance.
