Excerpt from Emily Moreland, or the Maid of the Valley Amen! Amen! Ejaculated Marian, clasping her hands, and raising her eyes, with the most emphatic solemnity. She had better now try to get a few hours' sleep, observed the old man, striving to speak with firmness, and making a sign to his wife to check the emotion which her daughter's expressive look and action had powerfully excited. Marian would have objected - she could sleep very well, she said, in the large chair and she knew her mother could not, at that time of night, prepare a bed without considerable trouble. A knock on the cottage door rouses a couple from their beds. To their joy, they find their estranged daughter, weak and fainting but holding a baby. Assuring her of their forgiveness and joy and having her home, they tuck her into bed and care for the infant. By the next morning, she is dead but her baby has survived. Later, as the woman's funeral procedes to the graveyard, a young man, the seducer who fathered the infant, rides up, and grieves.

The collection is sourced from the remarkable library of Victor Amadeus, whose Castle Corvey collection was one of the most spectacular discoveries of the late 1970s. The Corvey Collection comprises one of the most important collections of Romantic era writing in existence anywhere -- including fiction, short prose, dramatic works, poetry, and more -- with a focus on especially difficult-to-find works by lesser-known, historically neglected writers. The Corvey library was built during the last half of the 19th century by Victor and his wife Elise, both bibliophiles with varied interests.
