This book offers the first comprehensive coverage of microwave medical imaging, with a special focus on the development of novel devices and methods for different applications in both the diagnosis and treatment of various diseases. Upon introducing the fundamentals of electromagnetic imaging, it guides the readers to their use in practice by providing extensive information on the corresponding measurement and testing techniques. In turn, it discusses current challenges in data processing and analysis, presenting effective, novel solutions, developed by different research groups. It also describes state-of-the-art medical devices, which were designed for specific applications, such as brain stroke monitoring, lymph node diagnosis, image-guided hyperthermia, and chemotherapy response monitoring. The chapters, which report on the results of the EU-funded project EMERALD (ElectroMagnetic imaging for a novel genERation of medicAL Devices) are written by leading European engineering groups in electromagnetic medical imaging, whose coordinated action is expected to accelerate the translation of this technology “from research bench to patient bedside”. All in all, this book offers an authoritative guide to microwave imaging, with a special focus on medical imaging, for electrical and biomedical engineers, and applied physicists and mathematicians. It is also intended to inform medical doctors and imaging technicians on the state-of-the-art in non-invasive imaging technologies, at the purpose of inspiring and fostering the translation of research into clinical prototypes, by promoting a stronger collaboration between academic institutions, industrial partners, hospitals, and university medical centers.

Electromagnetic (EM) radio-wave technologies for medical imaging represent an emerging alternative diagnostic modality with some unique features, which is attracting the attention of many researchers worldwide. Diagnostic devices based on EM technology have no side-effects, as they exploit non-ionizing radiation, and their intrinsic low cost makes them sustainable for healthcare systems. This Special Issue provides a comprehensive account of this very active research area by gathering contributions that cover a variety of topics ranging from fundamental research questions to experimental validation and clinical translation.

The 5th International Workshop on Medical Imaging and Augmented Reality, MIAR 2010, was held at the China National Convention Center (CNCC), B- jing, China on September 19–20, 2010. MIAR has remained a truly international meeting, bringing together - searchers from all ?elds related to medical image analysis, visualization and targeted intervention. In recent years, technical advances in therapeutic delivery andagrowingdemandforpatient-speci?ctreatmenthaveacceleratedtheclinical applications of MIAR-related techniques. Imaging plays an increasingly imp- tant role in targeted therapy, with interventions such as drug or gene therapy relying on more accurate delivery tailored to individual patients. Rapid progress in surgical methodologies, such as those with robot assistance, demands p- cise guidance from both preoperative and intraoperative imaging. The volume of data available from existing and emerging imaging modalities leads to a - sire for more automated analysis for diagnosis, segmentation and registration. Research in this rapidly developing area is highly multi-disciplinary, integrating research in life sciences, physical sciences, engineering, and medicine.

Based on the authors’ decades-long tenure in clinical environments and their extensive teaching experience, Applied Medical Image Processing: A Basic Course introduces the basic methods in applied image processing without assuming that readers have extensive prior knowledge beyond basic applied mathematics, physics, and programming. Illustrated with simple, well-commented MATLAB® examples, the book’s tangible and accessible presentation demonstrates real-life applications. The rapid evolution of radiological imaging in the past four decades has brought medical image processing into the forefront as an essential tool for clinical research, a crucial component of modern diagnostics, and an indispensable element the actual treatment of diseases. A hands-on introduction to the basic image processing algorithms used in clinical routine applications, Applied Medical Image Processing: A Basic Course closes the gap between basic engineering knowledge such as simple programming and applied mathematics on the one hand, and the general understanding of a science that affects the health of a broad public.

This is the first book that presents a comprehensive introduction to and overview of electro-magnetic tissue property imaging techniques using MRI, focusing on Magnetic Resonance Electrical Impedance Tomography (MREIT), Electrical Properties Tomography (EPT) and Quantitative Susceptibility Mapping (QSM). The contrast information from these novel imaging modalities is unique since there is currently no other method to reconstruct high-resolution images of the electro-magnetic tissue properties including electrical conductivity, permittivity, and magnetic susceptibility. These three imaging modalities are based on Maxwell's equations and MRI data acquisition techniques. They are expanding MRI's ability to provide new contrast information on tissue structures and functions. To facilitate further technical progress, the book provides in-depth descriptions of the most updated research outcomes, including underlying physics, mathematical theories and models, measurement techniques, computation issues, and other challenging problems.
