Description: In Ancient India education was religion and religion as education. However, we have very little idea till now about how our education system in Ancient India had emerged out of our religious scriptures, how it had changed in response to the changing conditions in our past society and how it had contributed to the development of a prosperous and glosrious civilisation which has now become our proud heritage. Based on a critical study of our religious scriptures, Vedic, Buddhist and Jaina, as available in English, German and French translations, this book attempts to delineate these developments. Written largely for a non-specialist audience in India and abroad, this book will be useful not only for the students of history but also for those interested in our Ancient Indian history and culture.

Indian Educational system is the most ancient Educational systems in the world. Vedic,Postvedic and Buddhist periods had sound Educational policies , methods of learning , teaching ,evaluation and accreditation, syllabi and curricula, to suit every wake of life. Sanskrit enjoyed the status of common Educational language to unify the nation from Himalaya to Kanyakumari . But regional languages were not neglected. They flourished and translations of Sanskrit works into regional languages was done. Kerala, and the west coast of India in general , had the most ancient University of Valabhi which gave the title "e;Vallabha"e; , Sreevallabha, Sakalakalaavallabha etc to its scholars. The Valabhi University was existent from Prevedic and Vedic times and during the Budhist period , two scholars (Nandins) from Valabhi University established Nalanda University and from that time onwards the Vallabha kings became chancellors and vice chancellors of both these Universities. The Vallabhas declined when Vice chancellorship of Nalanda went to Bengal kings and subsequently when Cholas destroyed the Sreevallabha power of Kerala, Karnataka and Srilanka ( as described in the Manimangalam sasana of the Chola kings). The story of the educational system of India under Valabhi University in Vedic and Budhist period , its peculiarities, merits and demerits, the long family tree of the chancellors of Valabhi right from time of Parasurama upto the present Marthandavarma Uthradam Thirunal of Venad (Thiruvithamkoor Raajavansa) are explored in this work. It also throws light into the practices of the ancient Indians which might be analysed and made use of for National Integration and Global citizenship for world peace and a better Eduational system based on Values and cultural Integration.

India's journey in education, particularly its examination system, has been a compelling narrative of transformation, challenges, and continuous evolution. Since gaining independence in 1947, India has navigated a complex path to develop an education system that meets the needs of a diverse and rapidly growing population. The examination system, as a critical component of this journey, reflects the broader socio-economic, cultural, and political changes that the country has undergone over the past seven decades. This book, "India's Education Examination System: From Independence to the Present," aims to provide a comprehensive examination of the evolution, reforms, and current practices within India's examination system. By delving into the historical context, key reforms, and future directions, this book offers an in-depth understanding of how India has shaped its education policies to address the aspirations and challenges of its people. The examination system, often criticized for its rigidity and high-stakes nature, has seen numerous reforms aimed at making it more inclusive, equitable, and reflective of students' diverse talents and capabilities. From the early post-independence commissions, such as the University Education Commission and the Secondary Education Commission, to contemporary policies like the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, each chapter of this book explores the milestones and turning points that have defined India's examination landscape.

Just a thousand years ago, India was dotted with universities across its length and breadth, where international students flocked to gain credentials in advanced education. This illustrated book describes how these multi-disciplinary centers of learning existed in several forms such as forest universities, brick-and-mortar universities and temple universities. It examines the funding for these citadels of learning and their graduation ceremonies. The process by which India’s ancient systems of education helped to fuel a knowledge revolution around the world with its manuscripts, forming the basis for monographs and academic papers, is explained with references. The marauding incursions by Muslim invaders, which disrupted the idyllic world of university learning in India, followed by European colonization, which led to further erosion and degeneration of India’s traditional learning systems, have been taken up in some detail. Readers will get a snapshot view of India's education system down the ages from ancient to modern times.
