On socio-economic conditions of Jammu and Kashmir, India; a study.

Kashmir is renowned throughout the world for its beauty- for the girdle of snowy mountains which surrounded the lovely valley, for its rivers and lakes and its primeval forests, and for its moderate temperature. Kashmir was a centre of knowledge and education since the time of its habitation by humans. With the advent of the Aryans, ancient Kashmir produced scholars of the Vedas, and once Sanskrit emerged as the literary language, Kashmir’s took its study and learning to great heights, producing mature and renowned scholars of Sanskrit. Kashmir has a tradition of recorded history dating back to the times when history as an organized study was unknown in most of the civilized nations of today. There has been no serious attempt to delineate the economic life of people of Kashmir in the early period. The overemphasis by earlier scholars on political history had led the neglect of social history in general and economic life in particular. The aim of the present study is to give a comprehensive picture of economic life of Kashmir prior to medieval times. The information for this work has been derived from, literary works, epigraphical evidence, sculptural and archaeological data, and accounts of foreign travellers and historians.

Thought Based Mostly On The Secondary Works, Books On The Political History Of The State From The Time It Was Founded In 1846 To Its Accession In 1948, Are Galore. But The Study Of Socio-Economic History Has Practically Been Neglected. Still More Distressing Is The Fact That Evens Those Few Scholars Who Have Lifted Their Pen To Write On It, Have Done So With A Jaundiced Eye And On The Basis Of Only A Fraction Of The Available Material. As A Result, The Readers Have Formed A Number Of False And Misconceived Notions About The Men Who Ruled, Their Motives And The Outcome Of What They Did.The Present Work Is The Result Of About Six Years Labour Of Love Without Prejudice Against Any Region, Religion And Race, And Is Expected To Promote Harmony Between All The People Of The State By Apprising Them With The Factual Events That Took Place From 1885 To 1925, Notwithstanding Any Difference Of Opinion An Interpretation.Yet Another Purpose Of The Book Is To Assist The Policy Makers For The Greater Good Of The Greater Number Of People By Highlighting The Country And People S Potential As Well As Prejudices And Other Failings Which Impeded In The Past Their Progress In Such Important Fields Of Activity As Health, Sanitation, Education, Agriculture And Industry, Besides Other.

The Present Work Is An Introduction To Different Economic Indicators Contributing To The Development Of Defferent Sectors Of The Economy Of Jammu And Kashmir State. It Weill Prove Useful And Informative To The Planners, Policy Makers In The Government And To Social Researchers Everywhere.

This book argues that inequality of basic freedoms—economic, political, sociocultural—is a central cause of fragility and challenge to job creation in fragile geopolitical situations. ​It is based on extensive official data and stakeholder interactions in the conflict-ridden Indian border state of Jammu and Kashmir, and involves a case study research methodology. This is the first book which invokes the philosophical perspective of freedom to analyze two of the most pressing challenges of our time—fragility and job creation—and, as such, makes a fundamental contribution to both strands of academic and policy literature. From this perspective, development in the sense of freedoms—particularly the enhancement of human agency through jobs—should be a central strategy in tackling fragility. Most literature on Indian Kashmir has been emotional or political in nature, lacking the serious yet interesting multidisciplinary focus presented here—which is a historical assessment of Kashmir’s political economy, economic indices, employment patterns, challenges of infrastructure and human capital. Ending with a set of long-, medium- and immediate-term policy recommendations to address the challenge of jobs in the state, this is the only book on Indian Kashmir which is at once philosophical, social-scientific and policy-oriented in nature.
