This technical report provides detailed information that supports the White Pine in the Lake Abitibi and Lake Temagami Ecoregions of Ontario public report that is part of the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources' State of Resources Reporting series. It presents a brief review of the ecology of white pine, with special reference to the Lake Abitibi (3E) and Lake Temagami (4E) ecoregions of northeastern Ontario. As well, it provides a detailed presentation and discussion of provincial data on the current status and management of this resource. An overview of the climate, physiography, geology, soils, ecology, and ecological values associated with white pine forests in this region is followed by a review of the historical social and economic importance of white pine to both the province and the region. The manner in which European settlement and the historical development of Ontario shaped the extent, composition, structure, condition, and management of the white pine resource in the region is discussed. The policies and management practices, as well as challenges to white pine management in these ecoregions are summarized. The report concludes with a discussion of modelling efforts to compare the effects of current selected management scenarios on the future extent of white pine forests and associated wood supply.--Document.

This book aims to examine the context and practice of national parks regarding a countries obligations to safeguard biodiversity through the protection and management of forest-protected areas. The book examines the wider impacts of national parks within the scope of an integrated environmental hub at the global and regional level and eventually delves into the country case. Three areas are covered: theoretical underpinnings and concepts related to national parks, exploring their various modalities and integrated concerns for the environment; an empirical review in lieu of effective management of protected areas as defined by the World Conservation Union IUCN, addressing the efficient use of human and material resources, including national/agency-protected area regulations and legislation, policies, international conventions and designations, management plans, and/or agreements associated with those areas; and evaluation of challenges underlying a countrys intention to gauge the potential of a national park and pinpoint adequate attention on exploiting new strategies for national park management.
