This book is about people with disabilities (PWDs) and the extraordinary talents they have that can contribute towards the world economy generally and that of Southern and Central Africa in particular. The papers selected for this book were presented at an international conference that was held at the University of Botswana from 16th to 19th October 2018. The conference was held in order to address the injustices, discrimination and exclusion that people with disabilities face in their daily life. The papers discuss the need to train families and leaders in disability awareness, for clear national policies, the funding needed to address issues that affect PWDs, inclusive education, and the need to create a conducive environment and the implementation of policies, strategies and programmes. The book also points to the importance of sharing stories and experiences of success as a strategy of empowering PDWs.

Elizabeth Barnes argues compellingly that disability is primarily a social phenomenon—a way of being a minority, a way of facing social oppression, but not a way of being inherently or intrinsically worse off. This is how disability is understood in the Disability Rights and Disability Pride movements; but there is a massive disconnect with the way disability is typically viewed within analytic philosophy. The idea that disability is not inherently bad or sub-optimal is one that many philosophers treat with open skepticism, and sometimes even with scorn. The goal of this book is to articulate and defend a version of the view of disability that is common in the Disability Rights movement. The future of disability in America will depend on how well the U.S. prepares for and manages the demographic, fiscal, and technological developments that will unfold during the next two to three decades. Building upon two prior studies from the Institute of Medicine (the 1991 Institute of Medicine's report Disability in America and the 1997 report Enabling America), The Future of Disability in America examines both progress and concerns about continuing barriers that limit the independence, productivity, and participation in community life of people with disabilities.
