From scrolls and sheets of papyrus to elaborate and expensive codices to the mass press-printed volumes as we know them today, books have come a long way since writing was first developed. Although digital technology has impacted how we consume information over the last few decades, book design has survived as a means of showcasing creativity and craftsmanship, as books remain important sources of inspiration, knowledge, and entertainment. A Book on Books showcases some of the best book design work from all over the world in celebrating the designers' contributions to preserving reading culture, as they continue to make books eye-catching and exciting to read or own. It also captures the voices of key influencers from publishing, printmaking, book fair organizing, and bookshop-owning standpoints, as they continue to play a crucial role in keeping the book-making industry alive and thriving even in the unknown future.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 5th European Semantic Web Conference, ESWC 2008, held in Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain, in June 2008. The 51 revised full papers presented together with 3 invited talks and 25 system description papers were carefully reviewed and selected from a total of 270 submitted papers. The papers are organized in topical sections on agents, application ontologies, applications, formal languages, foundational issues, learning, ontologies and natural language, ontology alignment, query processing, search, semantic Web services, storage and retrieval of semantic Web data, as well as user interfaces and personalization.

Knowledge discovery in ubiquitous environments is an emerging area of research at the intersection of the two major challenges of highly distributed and mobile systems and advanced knowledge discovery systems. It aims to provide a unifying framework for systematically investigating the mutual dependencies of otherwise quite unrelated technologies employed in building next-generation intelligent systems: machine learning, data mining, sensor networks, grids, peer-to-peer networks, data stream mining, activity recognition, Web 2.0, privacy, user modelling and others. This state-of-the-art survey is the outcome of a large number of workshops, summer schools, tutorials and dissemination events organized by KDubiq (Knowledge Discovery in Ubiquitous Environments), a networking project funded by the European Commission to bring together researchers and practitioners of this emerging community. It provides in its first part a conceptual foundation for the new field of ubiquitous knowledge discovery - highlighting challenges and problems, and proposing future directions in the area of 'smart', 'adaptive', and 'intelligent' learning. The second part of this volume contains selected approaches to ubiquitous knowledge discovery and treats specific aspects in detail. The contributions have been carefully selected to provide illustrations and in-depth discussions for some of the major findings of Part I.

Foundations of Computational Intelligence Volume 6: Data Mining: Theoretical Foundations and Applications Finding information hidden in data is as theoretically difficult as it is practically important. Parallel and distributed processing, although within the focus of computer science research for a long time, is gaining more and more importance in a wide spectrum of applications. These proceedings aim to demonstrate the use of parallel and distributed processing concepts in different application fields, and attempt to spark interest in novel research directions to parallel and high-performance computing research in general. The objective of these workshops is to specifically address researchers coming from university, industry and governmental research organizations and application-oriented companies in order to close the gap between purely scientific research and the applicab- ity of the research ideas to real-life problems. Euro-Par is an annual series of international conferences dedicated to the pro- tion and advancement of all aspects of parallel and distributed computing. The 2008 event was the 14th issue of the conference. Euro-Par has for a long time been eager to attract colocated events sharing the same goal of promoting the dev- opment of parallel and distributed computing, both as an industrial technique and an academic discipline, extending the frontier of both the state of the art and the state of the practice. Since 2006, Euro-Par has been offering researchers the chance to co- cate advanced technical workshops back-to-back with the main conference.
