By focusing the various difficulties encountered in applying theory to practical concerns, this book explores the reasons for the absence of a radical politics in Habermas's work. In doing so, it shows that certain political implications of the theory remain unexplored. The book articulates a unique application of Habermasian theory, the actual functioning of decision-making groups, the nature of deliberative interaction, and the kinds of judgments participants must make if they are to preserve their democratic process.

This book is open access and available on www.bloomsburycollections.com. It is funded by Knowledge Unlatched. The 20th century has been described as the bloodiest in human history, but it was also the century in which people around the world embraced ideas of democracy and human rights as never before, constructing social, political and legal institutions seeking to contain human behaviour. Todd Landman offers an optimistic, yet cautionary tale of these developments, drawing on the literature, from politics, international relations and international law. He celebrates the global turn from tyranny and violence towards democracy and rights but also warns of the precariousness of these achievements in the face of democratic setbacks and the undermining of rights commitments by many countries during the so-called 'War on Terror'.

"We live in an age that demonstrates the powerful need for ethics in government. Democracy is a privilege that carries with it important responsibilities for the people and their representatives. As we look back on this era and determine the future of this nation, Dr. Long Thompson's book will be a resource for Americans who are seeking ways to secure our democracy and our future as a nation." Congressman John Lewis, Georgia's 5th District. Ethical leadership, steeped in integrity and fairness, matters. The future of our nation and our world depends upon the quality of America's character. In this uncompromising, absorbing look at our government and society today, Jill Long Thompson persuasively argues that we all have a meaningful role to play in shaping America's character and future. The citizenry, as well as their elected officials, are responsible for protecting fairness of participation and integrity in elections, as well as in the adoption and execution of laws. In this troubling time when the public is losing trust and confidence in our government, Jill Long Thompson shows us a bipartisan way forward.

Excerpt from Democracy and Ideals: A Definition These chapters, with the exception of the first and the last, were written while I was serving as chairman of the Army Education Commission with the American forces in France in 1918 and 1919, and as educational director of the American Expeditionary Force University at Beaune, 1919. The first chapter, in its present form recently rewritten, was originally prepared as an address before the Association of Colleges and Preparatory Schools of the Middle States and Maryland, in November, 1917. "American Character'' was delivered as a lecture at Bedford College, London, December 6, 1918, and was published in the Fortnightly Review, May, 1919. "French Ideals and American" was delivered as an address before American troops and other American audiences in France during 1918 and 1919, and was published May 20, 1919, as Bulletin 100 of the American Expeditionary Force University at Beaune. "Society as a University," prepared as an address for the opening of the University at Beaune, was published March 15 as Bulletin 18 of that institution, and was reprinted in the Educational Review for September. "Universal Training for National Service" was written at Beaune in April, and was published in the Review of Reviews for October. "University Leadership" was delivered on September 24 as the opening address for the winter session of Columbia University.
