Excerpt from De Incarnatione Verbi Dei: Athanasius on the Incarnation The course of the argument on the Incarnation of the Word of God will be found drawn out in the Synopsis, and need not be here repeated; but some remarks may not be out of place upon its characteristic lines of thought. The Creation of the World, the Fall of man, the Incarnation of the Word - these are the themes which occupy the first part of the essay. Athanasius first sweeps on one side the philosophical and heretical speculations of the time regarding the origin of the world, and establishes the true doctrine of creation - that God, through the instrumentality of His Word, brought the universe into being out of nothing. To man, however, He gave a special grace beyond that of mere existence - that of being made after His own image. This He further strengthened by placing him in Paradise, and giving him a law. Obedience to the law would ensure continuance in blessedness, and man would finally, by a deathless change, pass into the heavenly life: disobedience, on the other hand, would entail death and continuance in corruption. Man was disobedient, and in the first pair mankind as a whole became involved in guilt. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. By any standard, this is a classic of Christian theology. Composed by St Athanasius in the fourth century, it expounds with simplicity the theological vision defended at the councils of Nicaea and Constantinople: that the Son of God himself became "fully human, so that we might become god." Its influence on all Christian theology thereafter, East and West, ensures its place as one of the few "must read" books for all who want to know more about the Christian faith.
