Excerpt from Critical and Miscellaneous Essays, Vol. 1 of 3 How beautiful are all the subdivisions of time diversifying the dream of human life, as it glides away between earth and heaven! And why should moralists mourn over that mutability that gives the chief charm to all that passes so transitorily before our eyes, leaving image upon image fairer and dearer far than even the realities, still visible, and it may be for ever, in the waters of memory sleeping within the heart? Memory never awakes but along with imagination, and therefore it is "That she can give us back the dead, Even in the loveliest looks they wore!" The years, the months, the weeks, the days, the nights, the hours, the minutes, the moments, each is in itself a different living, and peopled, and haunted world. One life is a thousand lives, and each individual, as he fully renews the past, reappears in a thousand characters, yet all of them bearing a mysterious identity not to be misunderstood, and all of them, while every passion has been shifting and dying away, and reascending into power, still under the dominion of the same unchanging conscience, that feels and knows that it is from God. Excerpt from Critical and Miscellaneous Essays, Vol. 1 But he writes with as much ease and freedom as if Latin were his mother tongue 3 and where he is least happy, his failure seems to arise from the carelessness of a native, not from the ignorance of a foreigner. What Denham with felicity says of Crowley, may be applied to him. He wears the garb, but not the clothes, of the ancients. The only thing connected with him, we think, that has reached this country, is his saying, imported by Ma dame de Stael, and thankfully pocketed by most newspaper critics Providence has given to the French the empire of the land, to the English that of the sea, to the Germans that of - the air!' Of this last element, indeed, his own genius might easily seem to have been a denizen; so fantastic, many coloured, far-grasping, everyway perplexed and extraordinary is his mode of writing. To translate him properly is next to impossible; nay, a dictionary Of his works has actually been in part published for the use of German readers These things have restricted his sphere Of action, and may long restrict it, to his own country: but there, in return, he is a favourite of the first class studied through all his intricacies with trustful ad miration, and a love which tolerates much. During the last forty years, he has been continually before the public, in various capacities, and growing generally in esteem with all ranks of critics till, at length, his gainsayers have either been silenced or convinced; and Jean Paul, at first reckoned half-mad, has long ago vindicated his singularities to nearly universal satis faction, and now combines popularity with real depth of endow ment, in perhaps a greater degree than any other writer; being second in the latter point to scarcely more than one of his con temporaries, and in the former second to none. Excerpt from Critical and Miscellaneous Essays, Vol. 1 of 3 Leave any doubt of their authorship, have established for him a. High and enduring reputation. The conduct of this periodical is so universally understood to be in the hands of the Professor, that we may consider ourselves justified in describing him as its editor. He has long upheld its supremacy: the best sup ported magazines of England have failed in competing With it; because there is no living writer whose talents are so versatile, and consequently so fitted to deal With the varied topics upon which his judgment or his fancy must be employed. His learning is both profound and excursive; his criticism searching and sound; his descriptions of scenery exqmsitely true; his paintings of human character and passion admirable; his wit and humour delightful, when it does not degenerate into fun; and no writer of modern times has written so many deliciously eloquent passages which produce, if we may so express ourselves, gushes of admiration. The mind of Wilson is a remarkable blending of the kindly and the bitterz - his praise is always full and hearty; his censure almost unendura ble: he appears to have no control over his likings or dislikings - at times, pursues with almost superhuman wrath, and then, again, becomes so generous and eloquent, that he absolutely makes an author's character, and establishes his position by a few sentences of approval. From all his criticisms there may be gathered some evidence of a sound heart; of a nature like the Highland breezes - keen, but healthy; often most invigo rating when most severe - but which may be safely encountered only by those whose stamina is unquestionable. The personal appearance of Professor Wilson is very remarkable: his frame is, like his mind, powerful and robust. His completion is florid, and his features are finely marked; the mouth is ex qu1sitely chiselled, the expression of his countenance is gentle to a degree; but there is a lurking dgvil in his keen gray eye, that gives a very intelligible hint to the observer. His forehead is broad and high. To us, among all the great men we have ever beheld - and they have not been few - there is not one who so thoroughly extorts a mingled sensation of love and fear. Excerpt from Critical and Miscellaneous Essays, Vol. 3 of 7: Collected and Republished (First Time, 1839; Final, 1869) That no such apotheosis was appointed for Richter in his own country, or is now to be anticipated in any other, we can not but regard as a natural and nowise unfortunate circumstance. What divinity lies in him requires a calmer worship, and from quite another class of worshippers. Neither, in spite of that forty-years abeyance, shall we accuse England of any uncom mon blindness towards him: nay, taking all things into account, we should rather consider his actual footing among us as evinc ing not only an increased rapidity in literary intercourse, but an intrinsic improvement in the manner and objects of it. Our feeling of foreign excellence, we hope, must be becoming truer; our Insular taste must be opening more and more into a Eu ropean one. For Richter is by no means a man whose merits, like his singularities, force themselves on the general eye; in deed, without great patience, and some considerable catholicism of disposition, no reader is likely to prosper much with him. He has a fine, high, altogether unusual talent; and a manner of expressing it perhaps still more unusual. He is a Humorist heartily and throughout; not only in low provinces of thought, where this is more common, but in the loftiest provinces, where it is well-nigh unexampled; and thus, in wild sport, 'playing bowls with the sun and moon, ' he fashions the strangest ideal world, which at first glance looks no better than a chaos. Excerpt from Critical and Miscellaneous Essays, Vol. 3: Collected and Republished (First Time, 1839; Final, 1869) The German language, it is presumable, thou knowest if not, shouldst thou undertake the study thereof for that sole end, it were well worth thy while. Croquis, a man otherwise of rather satirical turn, surprises us, on this occasion, with a fit of enthusiasm. He declares often, that here is the finest of all living heads speaks much of blended passion and repose; serene depths of eyes; the brow, the temples, royally arched, a very palace of thought; -and so forth. Excerpt from Critical and Miscellaneous Essays That faculty of irony, of caricature, which often passes by the name of humour. But eon Sists chiefly in a certain superficial distortion or reversal of objects, and ends at best iii laughter. Bears no resemblance to the humour of Richter. A shallow endowment this; and often more a habit than an endowment. It is but a poor fraction of humour; or rather. It is the body to which the soul is wanting; any life it has being false. Artificial, and irrational. True humour springs not more from the head than from the heart; it is not contempt, its e'sence is love; it issues not in laughter.
