New technologies provide us with new opportunities to create new learning experiences, leveraging research from a variety of disciplines along with imagination and creativity. The Learning Ideas Conference was created to bring researchers, practitioners, and others together to discuss, innovate, and create. The Learning Ideas Conference 2023 was the 16th annual conference and was held as a hybrid event. The conference took place from June 14–16, 2023., both in New York and online, and included a special track: The ALICE (Adaptive Learning via Interactive, Collaborative and Emotional Approaches) Special Track. Topics covered in this book include among others: online learning methodologies, diversity and inclusion in learning, case studies in university and corporate settings, new technologies in learning (such as virtual reality, augmented reality, holograms, and artificial intelligence), adaptive learning, and project-based learning. The papers included in this book are of interest to researchers in pedagogy and learning theory, university faculty members and administrators, learning and development specialists, user experience designers, and others.

This book is an anthology produced by the international association, Learning in Higher Education (LiHE). LiHE, whose scope includes the activities of colleges, universities and other institutions of higher education, has been one of the leading organizations supporting a shift in the education process from a transmission-based philosophy to a student-centred, learning-based approach. Each of the chapters explores technology-enhanced learning in higher education in terms of either policy or practice. They contain detailed descriptions of approaches taken in very different curriculum areas, and demonstrate clearly that technology may and can enhance learning only if it is designed with the learning process of students at its core. So the use of technology in education is more linked to pedagogy than it is to bits and bytes.

This book analyses technology enhanced learning through the lens of Disruptive Innovation theory. The author argues that while technology has not disrupted higher education to date, it has the potential to do so. Drawing together various case studies, the book analyses established technologies through a Disruptive Innovation perspective, including virtual learning environments, and includes Wikipedia as an example of successful innovative disruption. The author also examines the disruptive potential of social media technologies and the phenomenon of user-owned technologies. Subsequently, the author explores strategic narratives for technology enhanced learning and imagines what the Disruptive University might look like in the future. This book will be valuable for scholars of technology enhanced learning in higher education as well as those looking to increase their understanding of and practice with technology enhanced learning.

Technology-enhanced learning is a timely topic, the importance of which is recognized by educational researchers, practitioners, software designers, and policy makers. This volume presents and discusses current trends and issues in technology-enhanced learning from a European research and development perspective. This multifaceted and multidisciplinary topic is considered from four different viewpoints, each of which constitutes a separate section in the book. The sections include general as well as domain-specific principles of learning that have been found to play a significant role in technology-enhanced environments, ways to shape the environment to optimize learners’ interactions and learning, and specific technologies used by the environment to empower learners. An additional section discusses the work presented in the preceding sections from a computer science perspective and an implementation perspective. This book comes out of the work in Kaleidoscope: a European Network of Excellence in which over 1,000 people from more than 90 institutes across Europe participate. Kaleidoscope brings together researchers from diverse disciplines and cultures, through their collaboration and sharing of scientific outcomes, they are helping move the field of technology-enhanced learning forward.

This book is based on the 9th International Conference in Methodologies and Intelligent Systems for Technology Enhanced Learning, which was hosted by the University of Salamanca and held in Ávila (Spain) from 26th to 28th June 2019. Expanding on the topics of the evidence-based TEL workshops series, it provides an open forum for discussing intelligent technologies for learning. In particular, it discusses recommendation mechanisms that enable us to tailor learning to different contexts and people, e.g., by considering their personality; and learning analytics that help augment learning opportunities, e.g., by supporting the adaptation of the learning material. In addition to technologies, it covers methods from different fields, such as educational psychology or medicine, and from diverse communities co-working with people, such as making communities and participatory design communities to help create novel TEL opportunities. Further it describes the use of methods and technologies to investigate and enhance learning for “fragile users”, like children, the elderly and those with special needs. Innovations in Technology Enhanced Learning, edited by Dr Anton Ravindran and Professor Liz Bacon, is a collection of state-of-the-art research papers discussing innovations in the area of technology enhanced learning in adult education. It was inspired by ideas presented at the annual Computer Science Education: Innovation and Technology Conferences, organized and administered by Global Science and Technology Forum (GSTF). Input for the twelve chapters have been sourced from ten geographically dispersed countries from across the world: USA, Spain, Portugal, UK, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Singapore, Iran and Australia, providing a truly international perspective on the field. With rapid developments in the technology and delivery mechanisms including the development of MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses), online learning is in the process of revolutionising higher education, which makes this book all the more relevant and timely.
