Gosse argued that fossils are not really the remains of creatures which existed. God had created the world in six days, but had made it look like it was already ancient, complete with the remains of non-existent pre-historic life. Gosse's work was popular with neither Christians nor evolutionists.

Adam, who had no mother, would have had no need of a navel (Omphalos), but God had given him one anyway to have the appearance of having had human ancestry. So begins the reasoning of Philip Gosse, who, in Darwin's time, argued that the fossil record is merely evidence that the Earth was created as though it was older than it is (so-called Old Earth Creationism). Today, this work is considered to be internally logically consistent, but not falsifiable, and hence not scientific.
