Corpus Analysis For Descriptive And Pedagogical Purposes

The eighteen chapters in this volume look at the use of corpus analysis for descriptive and pedagogical purposes, focusing on contexts where English is employed by specialists in the professions and academia. They also debate some of the challenges arising from the complex relationship between linguistic theory, data-mining tools and statistical methods.

This book provides a survey of issues and studies on ‘applied’ corpus linguistics across two crucial decades, 2000-2020, which have marked enormous advancements in the field of corpora studies. At present, corpus linguistics and its applications form a well-established field of research which deserves special attention by English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students and practitioners actively engaged in the study of the English language across the ‘three circles’. The original core of this volume drew on EFL data, and later progressed to include specific topics concerning English as a Second Language (ESL), as well as a first/native language. Such analyses are reported in the second part of the volume as individual replicable case studies investigating data from Italian learners of English at various academic levels, from Indian speakers of English as a second language, and from native speakers of English in Canada.

This volume includes methodological considerations and descriptions of some of the texts compiled in The Corpus of English Philosophy Texts (CEPhiT), together with a number of pilot studies that demonstrate how the corpus can be used to investigate English philosophy writing in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, from a synchronic and a diachronic perspective. CEPhiT is part of the Coruña Corpus of English Scientific Writing (CC). The sampling method employed requires the collection of extracts of ca. 10,000 words. This method has been followed in CETA and CEPhiT, with samples from 40 different authors in the latter, both from Europe and North America. Text selection is based on some extralinguistic criteria, such as year of publication, sex, geographical provenance and text-types/genres. The corpus contains samples belonging to six different genre categories. This taxonomy, as well as some other extralinguistic information, can be used to search the corpus. CEPhiT, together with the Coruña Corpus Tool purpose-designed software by IrLab, was originally made available with the volume on CD-rom. Patterns and Meanings consists of case studies which make use of corpora and concordance technology. Each case study elaborates a problem area, makes reference to both the descriptive and applied literature thus far, and then suggests ways of exploiting corpus data to shed light on the problem. Language phenomena investigated include word sense, phraseology and syntax, metaphor and creative use, text reference, idiom, and translation. Emphasis is given to information that usually cannot be found in dictionaries, grammars, language textbooks or other resources, but which the study of corpus data makes available. This work is particularly important not only for its language description insights, but also for pedagogical application. Contemporary society has witnessed radical changes in the field of communications in terms of how messages and meanings are disseminated.
