Temperatures averaged 3° to 50 below normal in the middle Mississippi and Ohio Valleys and Southeast, along the West Coast and in Washington and the Columbia River Basin. The week was warmer than normal elsewhere, with departures ranging from 5° to 7° in the Rocky Mountain region and Northeast. In the Far West snowfall early in the week and again at the weekend left several inches on the ground in northern and central interior areas at lower elevations and much greater amounts in the mountains.
