"Contract Bridge for New Bridge Players" is a series of 50 lessons my wife, Christine, and I started teaching to beginning Social (or Party) Bridge Players over 10 years ago. We wrote our own lessons for our classes. A copy of each week's lesson was given to each student each week and was available to any student that missed a class so that they could keep up with the lessons. The lessons are based, in part, on my experience playing and teaching bridge for over 60 years.Because this book is written for beginning Social Bridge players (as opposed to more experienced players), the following considerations have been made in "Contract Bridge for New Bridge Players": 1. In Social (or Party) bridge, partners often change every 4 to 6 hands. Therefore the bidding system used is very simple and will be understood by most Social Bridge players.2. Only one Convention (Blackwood) is used.4. When I teach a class, I am there to answer questions. With this book, I have tried to anticipate and answer a variety of questions that may occur. 5. To personalize the book and make it more interesting, I have included a number of bridge stories from my family. Some go back to when my parents were playing duplicate bridge in the 1930's - soon after Contract Bridge was invented. At that time, they had to create their own bidding system. The standard 52-card deck is used. The suits ranking downward in order are spades, hearts, diamonds, clubs; and the cards ranking downward in order are ace, king, queen, jack, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2.There are four players, two against two as partners, who face each other across the table. To determine partners, a pack may be spread facedown for each player to draw a card (not valid are any of the four cards at either end). The players drawing the two highest cards would then play as partners, the highest having choice of seats and cards (when two packs are used) and becoming the first dealer.If five or six wish to play in the same game, the draw establishes precedence: the player lowest in order of precedence sits out until the end of the first rubber, when he replaces the next lowest in the order.
