This book contains selected papers from the presentations given at the 7th EURO-Working Group Meeting on 'Iransportation, which took place at the Helsinki University of Technology (HUT), Finland, during August 2-4, 1999. Altogether 31 presentations were given and 14 full papers have been selected in this publication through a peer review process coordinated by the editors. The papers in this book cover a wide range of transportation problems from the simulation of railway traffic to optimum congestion tolling and mode choice modeling with stated preference data. In general, the variety of papers clearly demonstrates the wide areas of interest of people who are involved in the research of transportation systems and their operation. They as well demonstrate the importance and possibilities of modeling and theoretical approaches in the analysis of transportation systems and problem solving. Most of the papers are purely theoretical in nature, that is, they present a theoretical model with only a hypothetical example of applica tion. There are, however, some papers, which are closer to the practice or describe applications of and give interesting results of studies made by known methodologies. It is especially noteworthy, that half of the accepted papers deal with planning and operation of public transport.

CO2 capture and sequestration (CCS) is a major means to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, especially from centralized energy conversion sites. Many studies have been conducted either on the CO2 capture side or on the sequestration side, but research on CO2 transport, which connects the capture side and the sequestration side, is rather limited. CO2 capture sites and sequestration sites are usually not geographically located in the same region, thus planning and design of CO2 transport infrastructure must be considered before capture and sequestration activities are conducted. Previously, some studies have been conducted to address the optimal planning problem of CO2 pipelines network via a source-sink match approach, which is applicable to early stages of CCS development when the total amount of CO needed to be transported is rather small. However, in scenarios with large amount of CO to be transported, the source-sink match approach appears to be less efficient. In this manuscript, we propose a superstructure based modelling and optimization framework for optimal planning of CO2 transport pipelines network, where all CO2 emissions sources and sequestrations sites can be connected by pipelines, and pump stations can also be built along pipelines to maintain the pressure of CO transported. We also provide a case study of a region in North China, with 45 emissions sources and four sequestration sites. Different configurations of pipelines network are illustrated in scenarios with low, medium, and high CO2 capture rates.

Scheduled transportation networks give rise to very complex and large-scale networkoptimization problems requiring innovative solution techniques and ideas from mathematical optimization and theoretical computer science. Examples of scheduled transportation include bus, ferry, airline, and railway networks, with the latter being a prime application domain that provides a fair amount of the most complex and largest instances of such optimization problems. Scheduled transport optimization deals with planning and scheduling problems over several time horizons, and substantial progress has been made for strategic planning and scheduling problems in all transportation domains. This state-of-the-art survey presents the outcome of an open call for contributions asking for either research papers or state-of-the-art survey articles. We received 24 submissions that underwent two rounds of the standard peer-review process, out of which 18 were finally accepted for publication. The volume is organized in four parts: Robustness and Recoverability, Robust Timetabling and Route Planning, Robust Planning Under Scarce Resources, and Online Planning: Delay and Disruption Management.

This book is dedicated to metaheuristics as applied to vehicle routing problems. Several implementations are given as illustrative examples, along with applications to several typical vehicle routing problems. As a first step, a general presentation intends to make the reader more familiar with the related field of logistics and combinatorial optimization. This preamble is completed with a description of significant heuristic methods classically used to provide feasible solutions quickly, and local improvement moves widely used to search for enhanced solutions. The overview of these fundamentals allows appreciating the core of the work devoted to an analysis of metaheuristic methods for vehicle routing problems. Those methods are exposed according to their feature of working either on a sequence of single solutions, or on a set of solutions, or even by hybridizing metaheuristic approaches with others kind of methods.

Inhaltsangabe:Introduction: As the world population is growing continuously and emerging markets are expanding, natural recourses are being used even more intensively. Because of the scarcity of natural resources, industry faces a changing business environment. Due to government regulations, companies nowadays must handle not only in terms of efficiency, but also of sustainable development and new market opportunities. Thus, with the progression of the logistics sector in recent years, supply chain management and especially the concept of reverse logistics have become more important for both, industry and science. By utilizing reverse logistics, companies aim at maximizing their product revenue while reducing the costs of product returns. Accordingly, implementing an effective concept of reverse logistics, while manufacturing environmentally friendly products, has become a strategic issue. In order to meet the requirements, companies are confronted with the problem of reducing the uncertainties regarding the quality, quantity and timing of the product returns. In this context, a high level of uncertainty leads to a strong increase in complexity compared to the traditional forward supply chains. Using modern computer aided modelling techniques such as system dynamics, helps to counteract this complexity since they not only enable a better understanding of the dynamic behaviour of such complex systems but also allow an improved estimation of the impact of a changing environment and management decisions. This thesis contributes towards an improvement of the strategic decision making process in the field of reverse logistics by providing a generic simulation model which can be used to analyse the influence of different environmental and economical policies with respect to prevailing market conditions. To achieve this objective, the following approach is proposed: In Chapter 2, the theoretical foundation of reverse logistics is characterized forming the framework for the subsequent analytical approach concerning the appropriate model development. For this purpose, first, an overview of the state of the art concerning the processes and influencing factors within the field of reverse logistics is provided. This is achieved by describing the theoretical background of the topic, including a characterization of the impact of individual reverse logistic activities on each other and on their environment. Afterwards, current challenges and trends when [...]
