Excerpt from Foreign Agriculture, Vol. 22: July, 1958 OF all our farm products, feed grains probably have the bright est export future. We are the world's greatest and most efficient producer of these grains and are already the largest exporter. We have competition from Argentina, Canada, Australia, and a few Other countries, but we believe world import demand will expand at such a rate that much of the increased demand can only be satisfied here. Expansion of demand for feed grains will, of course, depend on the rate of economic development abroad to support higher standards of living and, manually, on a Stable economic and political climate in the world. If these conditions are assumed - and we really have no choice but to make that assumption - then the possibilities are such as to justify a major effort on our part. Excerpt from Foreign Agriculture, Vol. 2: A Review of Foreign Farm Policy, Production, and Trade; December 1938 Exports of American agricultural products to the United Kingdom in recent years have been valued at around annually approximately one-third of the total agricultural exports from the United States. Excluding raw cotton, the British share has been around 50 percent. In 1936, the United Kingdom accounted for more in value of United States agricultural products sold abroad than the aggregate for the 25 leading continental European customers for American farm products. The relative importance of the United Kingdom market in the total United States export trade in agricultural products may be seen from table 2. For a number of American agricultural commodities, such as cured hams, lard, certain other pork products, canned fruit, barley, hops, honey, and flue-cured leaf tobacco, the bulk of total exports is destined for the United Kingdom. The British market is also of substantial importance for several: other American agricultural products, as may be seen from table 1. Excerpt from Foreign Agriculture, Vol. 23: May, 1958 During the past few months unity emerged in a more dramatic form, taking the world by surprise. Egypt and Syria, without benefit of a com mon physical boundary, joined fully into one United Arab Republic. Their move precipitated action on another front of the Arab League: Iraq and Jordan united in the form of the Arab Union. Borh new entities Opened the doors for other Arab members to join. So far Yemen has responded by joining the United Arab Republic, forming a third entity - United Arab States. And this may be only the beginning, with the next few months showing the trend. We are concerned here with the agricultural aspects of these unions. What impact will they have upon agricultural production and trade? What adjustments must the compon ent units make? What advantages or disadvantages will result? And lastly. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Foreign Markets for Agricultural Products and the Competition of Foreign Agricultural Producers in Our Foreign and Domestic Markets Foreign information in regard to imported agricultural commodities is no less essential. Timely information on foreign wool conditions is received by our Foreign Agricultural Service and is distributed promptly to wool growers and wool growers' associations throughout the United States. For example, the principal features of the London wool auctions are covered by cables from our Agricultural Commissioner in London. The activity of the wool manufacturing industry at Bradford, England, has an important bearing on world wool prices, and weekly cables covering conditions there are received through the American Consul at Bradford. Cabled reports are received on the trend of wool values in the auctions in Australia and New Zealand. We need more information as to the condition of sheep, and we need advanced estimates of the production of wool in all of these countries. We have sent a man to New Zealand, Australia, and South Africa to study methods of marketing wool and he has made a valuable report, but we need to investigate further the possibilities of expanding production in these important countries. Another illustration of the beginning of the development of a valuable service is the reporting on shipments of early vegetables from Mexico into the United States. Expansion of the vegetable industry on the Mexican West Coast during the past few years has introduced a factor in the American market which affects materially American producers of early vegetables. To meet this competition effectively, it is necessary for American producers and shippers of winter vegetables to be informed regarding the size of the Mexican creps; the factors, such as weather and diseases, affecting production; and the movement of vegetables to American markets.
