From the Golden Age to Goya. This is the first study wholly devoted to reception of Spanish art in Britain and Ireland. Examining the extent and sources of knowledge of Spanish art in the British Isles during an age of increasing contact, particularly in theaftermath of the Peninsular War, it contains contributions by leading scholars, including reprints of three essays by Enriqueta Harris Frankfort, to whose memory this book is dedicated. Focusing on Spanish art from the Golden Age to Goya, these studies chart the growth in understanding and appreciation of the Spanish School, and its punctuation by controversies and continuing distrust of religious images in Protestant Britain, as well as by the successive `discoveries' of individual artists - Murillo, Velázquez, Ribera, Zurbarán, El Greco and Goya. The book publishes important new research on art importation, collecting and dealing, and discusses the increase in access to andscholarship on works of art, including their reproduction through both traditional prints and copies and the newly invented photographic methods. It also considers for the first time the role of women in reflecting taste for thearts of Spain. It is richly illustrated with 17 colour and 54 black and white illustrations. NIGEL GLENDINNING is Emeritus Professor of Spanish and Fellow of Queen Mary University of London. HILARY MACARTNEY isHonorary Research Fellow of the Institute for Art History, University of Glasgow. Excerpt from Murillo: A Collection of Fifteen Pictures, and a Potrait of the Painter With Introduction and Interpretation As most of the important works of Murillo treat religious subjects it is unnecessary to apologize for the lack of variety in the selections here made. The object has been to show as far -as possible the range of his artistic power and the diversity of his methods. From the strict realism of his genre, pictures to the high idealism of the Immaculate Conception, nearly every phase of Murillo's work is represented in this little collection. This volume has been published to celebrate the recent and extensive conservation of the National Gallery of Ireland?s 'Prodigal Son series', a cycle of six paintings by master storyteller of the Spanish Golden Age, Bartolomé Esteban Murillo. Recounting the life story of these six remarkable canvases from their creation in the 1660s to the present day, the book describes their astounding journey through eminent Spanish collections, a royal household, and into the hands of the Vatican, before making their way to Russborough, County Wicklow, and finally to the National Gallery of Ireland in 1987.0The volume is rich with full-colour images by NGI photographer Roy Hewson who documented the dramatic transformation of the paintings during the conservation project, and accompanied by essays by Aoife Brady and Muirne Lydon, as well as detailed entries and technical notes on each painting.00Exhibition: National Gallery of Ireland, Dublin (29.02-30.08.2020).
